🐴❤️🩹 Farm Life: When a Day of Rest Turns Into an Emergency Vet Visit… or TWO.
What was supposed to be a day of rest, cleaning, and catching up on messages quickly turned into an emergency vet appointment… with a second patient added to the list. Because apparently, I needed a few more things on my plate. 🫠
First, a HUGE thank you to Durango Equine Veterinary for coming out and taking such wonderful care of Wh***ey and Doxie!
🐴 First up: Wh***ey.
Our sweet boy unfortunately found himself on the receiving end of a horn… right in the butt. 😩
Despite his injury, Wh***ey was an absolute gentleman. He stood calmly and patiently through all the poking, prodding, and examinations, even before sedation. Sedation was ultimately used for both his safety and the veterinarian’s.
Unfortunately, his recovery isn’t going to be a quick one.
❤️🩹 At least 2 months of stall rest.
❤️🩹 No supervised walks for at least 2 weeks.
❤️🩹 Wound cleaning and flushing twice daily.
❤️🩹 Antibiotics and pain medication every 12 hours.
Because who doesn’t need a few more chores added to their daily farm routine?! 🙃
🐴 Next up: Doxie.
Our sweet girl developed an abscess in her hoof, and all the recent rain and mud certainly didn’t help matters.
Doxie was also an absolute champ during her examination. But the cutest part of her entire appointment? She acquired herself a new best friend. 🥹
🐱 Meet Stripes, her emotional support kitten.
This little guy decided Doxie needed some extra love. He would curl up on her, purring away, and she would just settle and relax. It was honestly the sweetest thing to witness. ❤️
Doxie’s recovery plan includes:
🐾 Approximately 2 weeks of stall rest.
🐾 Staying in a clean, dry stall.
🐾 Sporting a very fashionable duct-tape diaper on her hoof.
🐾 A follow-up with our farrier this week to determine if anything additional needs to be done.
All in all, today could have ended very differently.
What started as checking on Doxie actually led us to discovering Wh***ey’s injury. Sometimes things happen in a certain order for a reason, and today I’m incredibly thankful we were in the right place at the right time.
Both animals have a long road ahead
