We have had several questions about New World screwworm, so we wanted to share a calm, practical update for pet owners.

At this time, we have not seen confirmed cases in Burnet or Llano County.

There is no need to panic, but prevention and early wound care are VERY important.

The most important things pet owners can do right now are simple:
1. Keep pets on monthly flea/tick prevention
2. Call your veterinarian right away if a wound gets worse, smells, drains, or has maggots
3. Check wounds, ears, feet, surgery sites, hot spots, and irritated skin regularly
4. Keep any wound clean, protected, and treated promptly

For most owned pets receiving regular care (INCLUDING FULL SCALE PREVENTITIVE), the risk is low. Staying aware, keeping pets protected, and catching wounds early are the best ways to help keep animals safe.

HCHS will continue monitoring updates and taking precautions with animals coming into our care.

Wishlist Wednesday 💙

We are in a very overwhelming part of the year at the shelter. Puppy and kitten season is in full force, kennels are full, and our team is doing everything we can to keep every animal safe, comfortable, and cared for.

Right now, we are especially low on long-lasting treats for our dogs.

These may seem like a small thing, but they make a huge difference. Long-lasting treats give our dogs something positive to focus on, help reduce stress, keep their minds busy, and make their time in the shelter just a little bit easier.

For dogs who are waiting day after day for a family, that matters so much.

Every donation, every bag of treats, every share, and every bit of support means more to us than we can say. We know there are so many needs in the world, and we never take it lightly when our community chooses to help our pets.

We have already had multiple rabies cases in our region this year. Please, please protect your pets.

Hill Country Humane Society will be at Marble Falls High School on Tuesday, June 23rd from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM for a low-cost drive-through pet clinic.

Services available:
-Rabies vaccine: $10, Includes certificate and tag
-Microchip: $10, Lifetime registration
-DHPP/FCP vaccines: $0, Provided at no cost thanks to Petco Love

This is a drive-through clinic, so please stay in your car and our team will come to you.

!!! IMPORTANT: ****Cats must be in secure carriers.**** We will not be able to see cats that are not in a carrier. This is for the safety of your cat, our team, and everyone attending.

Rabies is deadly, but it is preventable. A $10 vaccine can protect your pet, your family, and your community.
