Read to a Guinea Pig at Brookline, NH Public Library was Wednesday and I got to see new faces and some long time supporters. Wilbur and Jet loved snuggling, listening to stories, and eating (of course). I love chatting with families, talking about guinea pig needs, and showing how small animals can be part of everyday life.

Our next Read to a Guinea Pig is Monday, September 8. We also have a Guinea Pig Care 101 class September 17, Guinea Pig Storytime September 23, and Read to a Guinea Pig September 24. Come join us!

I can now share that thanks to the efforts of Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue, Wheektopia will be one of several east coast rescues opening our hearts and cages to some of the LA 400 guinea pigs from the California hoarding case in July. Other than knowing we are receiving girls, we will be as surprised as you when they arrive early September. I will take in around 4, just a sliver of the 400, but Wheektopia will make sure these ladies recover and relax in ultimate comfort. The picture attached is a picture of some of the rescued piggies.

Helping All Little Things and Leaps and Squeaks will also take in piggies in addition to Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue. A big thank you to Bunnies on Board for handling transport. They are having a fundraiser the end of this week to help cover transport costs.

We will all need support for these piggies as well as the animals in our care. Reach out to one of us or Bunnies on Board to show your support.

In the ongoing trend of guinea pigs coming to Wheektopia from bad situations, two fellow rescuers ( and ) were able to get five males out of a bad situation. We met up and I took the three older boys home.

They were all in the same cage and poor Kendrick is covered in bite wounds and has hair loss. There isn’t any sign of infection though! He’s now in a jumbo cage with his possible brother, LeBron. Drake is happier on his own and enjoying space to spread out in a Midwest next to new friends.

After recovery, they will be available for adoption. Let’s keep spreading the word about proper care of piggies. As a reminder, boars shouldn’t live in more than pairs (though there are some special exceptions to that rule). And all piggies need as much space as you can give them!

Vet update! 6 piggies went to Southern Maine Small Mammal Hospital today. Thank you for your support to make it happen!

Caramel and Tilly both had small procedures. A tooth trim (literally one tooth) and skin scrape for Caramel and an ultrasound for Tilly. Tilly’s cysts continue to remain small and stable and Caramel has ringworm she shared with her best friend, Tilly. They started treatment today.

Rosie is healthy and ready for adoption this weekend!

Creamy and Medusa both have points on their teeth, misshapen poo from poor diet, and inflamed, swollen feet. They will be on medication and receive special foot care as well as lots of hay and Timothy hay toys for chewing.

Billy’s feet are in bad shape and he suffered several broken toes over the years, I think due to cage condition and it being so small. He had some bladder sensitivity, but an ultrasound showed sludge, but no stones. He will also have special care for his feet, daily anti inflammatory medication, veggies lower in calcium, supplements, and proper care and nutrition.

Billy update! 🐹🤍 First, thank you for all the support today. Thanks to several donations, we were able to cover vet costs today as well as extra medication and supplements needed for these piggies.

Billy went to Southern Maine Small Mammal Hospital today and received a full health check. His feet are in bad shape and he suffered several broken toes over the years, I think due to cage condition and it being so small. He had some bladder sensitivity, but an ultrasound showed sludge, but no stones.

Billy will have special care for his feet, daily anti inflammatory medication, veggies lower in calcium, supplements, and proper care and nutrition. He will have a home here at Wheektopia with the other distinguished, elderly sanctuary boars of Wheektopia. Right now he is beside Ferris, a 2 year old boy I have had difficulty finding a friend for, but they’re seem to be good bar buddies.

This is Billy. He’s at least 5.5 years old and has spent 5 years living in a cage the size of a hay box. A family member recognized this was not a good environment for him and contacted me for surrender. He arrived today and I was really shocked by his cage size. I’m he’s not in great shape so I am bumping someone and taking him to the vet today.

I gave Billy a bath, critical care, vitamin C, and a cage much bigger than his previous one (just at 8 sq ft now). That hay box? That was his cage size. For 5 years.

URGENT NEED! We now have 8 piggies going to the vet today and are $1️⃣8️⃣5️⃣ short in our account to cover exam costs. I also need to go veggie shopping and Saturday is pellet and hay stock up day! I tend to shy away from donation pleads, but today it’s needed. Thank you! Venmo or directly calling our vet office gets money to Wheektopia quickly!

Reminder that our most basic costs are for food and are $86/week on pellets, $28/week on hay (I buy 2 big, locally sourced bales), $120/week (minimum) on produce, and about $10/week on supplements. That’s a total of $2️⃣4️⃣4️⃣/week to feed these babies. I have a habit of paying out of my family’s funds for some of these costs when short, but I would rather raise the funds to care for these sweet babies.

Today at Read to a Guinea Pig at Brookline, NH Public Library, Tomato and Theodore were excellent spokespigs! 4 children who never held or touched a pig before got to experience piggy time! It was a great experience. I love meeting new families and helping them learn about the fun, love, and joy piggies could add to their home.
