BREAKING: What to Do When Your Dog Breaks

If your dog does break, the best thing to do is stop the retrieve if possible. If you can stop the dog, you can clearly communicate that breaking is not acceptable and help them understand that there are consequences for leaving before being sent.

However, don’t overcorrect a break if you’re unable to stop the retrieve. You don’t want to create more confusion by correcting something you can no longer control.

If your dog continues to be unsteady or starts creeping, don’t immediately give them another send. Take a step back, work on getting them steady again, and wait until they’re settled before setting up another retrieve.

The goal isn’t just to correct the break. It’s to teach the dog that remaining steady is part of the job

Command response matters.

Try giving your command one time and follow up with a correction if needed. Repeating commands over and over can teach your dog to wait for you to say it multiple times before responding, or eventually stop responding altogether.

Be clear, be consistent, and hold your dog accountable for the command you give. You want a dog that responds the first time, not the third or fourth.

Training beyond your backyard means preparing your dog for the real thing. 🦆 Take them to the places you’ll be hunting and expose them to real-life hunting scenarios, obstacles, and conditions they may encounter before opening day. The more familiar they are with these situations, the better prepared they’ll be when it’s time to go to work!

🐾 Dog of the Week: Honey!

What’s sweeter than Honey? This weeks dog of the week owned by TJ Hedge of Falling Feather Outdoors has been doing a great job in South Dakota this weekend chasing pheasants. Honey has been a part of all levels of training we offer at Ridgemark Retrievers including our tune up program each fall. We are wishing her the best gong into her 4th season as the main guide dog at Falling Feather Outdoors..

We love seeing our dogs do what they were trained to do in the field! 🦆🐕

🎯 What causes a dog to break?
Part 2: Handler Timing

Your timing matters more than you think!

If you consistently send your dog 2–3 seconds after a bird falls, your dog will start anticipating that pattern. Eventually, they learn to expect the send instead of waiting for your command.

Don’t let your dog pattern you! Mix up your timing. Wait 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, or even a minute. Teach your dog that the only thing that releases them is your command, not the amount of time that has passed.

Keep it unpredictable and reinforce patience! 🦆

Honey, owned by Mark Barnett, is showing off in Canada on her first hunt! She completed our Gun Dog and Land T programs this year, and topped off her training season by earning her Started Hunting Retriever title. Now she gets to gain valuable experience in the field and show how well her training has prepared her for real hunting situations. At just over a year old, we’re thrilled to see Honey working confidently and making the most of an exciting first hunting season!

We really enjoy receiving updates! Be sure to tag us in photos of your Ridgemark Retriever — we’d love to stay updated on your season!

Knowing when to quit is just as important as knowing when to push. Keep training sessions around 15–20 minutes, end on a good note, and leave your dog wanting more. The goal isn’t to wear them out, it’s to keep them engaged and make every session count.
