Today, BVMC proudly celebrates Crystal and her 5 years of dedicated service!

Crystal graduated from MATC in 2020 as a Certified Veterinary Nurse and joined our team shortly after. Since then, she has played an important role in our practice, working primarily with small animal surgeries and appointments.

Crystal exemplifies compassion and care in every interaction—with both our furry patients and their humans. She approaches every task with a positive attitude and a smile, always willing to lend a helping hand to her team.

Thank you, Crystal, for your commitment, kindness, and hard work. You truly make a difference, and we’re grateful to have you as part of the BVMC family!

BVMC is proud to honor Kari for an incredible 25 years of service!

Kari began her journey with BVMC in 2000 after earning her degree as an Administrative Assistant. For her first 10 years, she worked alongside a small client care team, demonstrating an exceptional work ethic and a rare ability to connect with staff, clients, and doctors alike. Her dedication and leadership did not go unnoticed, and in 2010, Kari became BVMC’s very first Office Manager—a role that paved the way for the practice we know today.

Since then, Kari has grown with us and now serves as our Practice Manager, overseeing a team of more than 50 employees! While her role is one of the most challenging in the clinic, Kari takes it on with passion and resilience. She cares deeply for our clients, loves the team she leads, and fiercely protects her staff.
Kari embraces every challenge, never backs down from a task, and is always focused on making each clinic run smoothly. Through her leadership, she listens, adapts, and drives continuous improvement for the entire team. This year, Kari was selected as Practice Manager of the Year for Wisconsin.

Kari, thank you for 25 years of dedication, loyalty, and leadership. You truly make a difference at BVMC, and we are so grateful for everything you

🌟 Celebrating 40 Years of Dedication 🌟

Today, we honor and congratulate Laurie for an incredible 40 years of service at our clinic. ❤️

From the very beginning, Laurie has been a steady, caring presence for our patients, clients, and team. Her dedication, compassion, and knowledge have touched countless lives — both two-legged and four-legged — over the years. 🐾

It’s hard to put into words just how much she means to us. She’s more than a co-worker — she’s family. 💕

Thank you, Laurie, for four decades of loyalty, hard work, and heart. We are so lucky to have you, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

🌡️ Heat Stroke in Pets: Know the Signs. Act Fast. 🐾
With summer heat in full swing and the upcoming heat advisory for the week, heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency we see all too often in pets. Dogs and cats can overheat quickly — even just a short walk or time outside can become dangerous.

🚨 Watch for signs of heat stroke:
• Heavy panting or drooling
• Lethargy or unresponsiveness
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Red or pale gums
• Stumbling, weakness, or collapse
• Seizures

📍 If you see these symptoms:
Move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately
Offer small amounts of cool (not ice cold) water
Gently wet their fur with room-temperature water or damp towels
Do NOT use ice or cold baths — this can worsen the situation
Call us or the nearest emergency clinic immediately

🧊 Prevention tips:
• Walk pets early in the morning or later in the evening
• Provide plenty of fresh water and shade
• Avoid car rides unless absolutely necessary — and never leave pets in a parked car
Your pet’s safety is always our priority. If you have any questions about summer safety or if your pet shows any signs of distress, please call us right away.

Summer fair season is here, and it’s a great opportunity to get outside, enjoy your community, and support local vendors, farmers, and 4-H participants! 🌽🎠 From funnel cakes to livestock shows, there’s something for everyone at your county or state fair.
Many of our clients and their families are involved in 4-H and FFA, working hard all year to raise and care for animals – and we’re proud to support them! 🐖🐄🐓

So grab your walking shoes, bring some sunscreen, and go cheer on the amazing young people in our community. It’s a great way to make memories and show your support!

Let us know which fair you’re planning to attend – we’d love to hear about your favorite events! Show us some of your fair fun in the comments!

🇺🇸 Fourth of July is Almost Here! 🎆

As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day, don’t forget about our furry family members! Many pets get anxious or frightened by fireworks and loud noises.

🐾 If your pet is sensitive to loud sounds, now is the time to call us to discuss calming medications or other options to help them stay safe and comfortable during the holiday.

📛 Also, be sure to check that your pet’s ID tags are up to date and securely attached to their collar. If they panic and run, proper identification can help bring them home quickly.

Give us a call this week to get your pet ready for a safe and stress-free holiday! ❤️🐶🐱

The Brodhead Veterinary Medical Center family is growing again! We are ecstatic to announce the arrival of two new large animal doctors in June. Drs. Gathje and Crews will be riding along with our large animal doctors throughout the summer. We look forward to everyone meeting them and hope you will all issue them a warm welcome. Below are their bios to help you get to know them before they start.

Dr. Alyssa Gathje grew up in Lanesboro, MN raising sheep and chickens. She attended UW-River Falls to earn degrees in Dairy and Meat Animal Science and then the University of Minnesota-College of Veterinary Medicine to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Gathje moved to Blanchardville, WI with her fiancé Dylan and lab mix Sadie. They look forward to getting married in September. In her free time, Dr. Gathje enjoys spending time with her friends and family and getting outside as much as possible. Kayaking and 4-wheeler rides are two of her favorite activities and she hopes to refine her green thumb by starting a garden this summer. Baking is also a hobby that Dr. Gathje enjoys and she is working on perfecting her cheesecake recipe.

Dr. Gathje’s veterinary interests include bovine reproduction, sheep and goat care and production and large animal preventive medicine. She looks forward to joining the Brodhead-Monroe team and meeting all their clients. Dr. Gathje also looks forward to becoming involved with local 4-H and FFA groups to help give back to organizations that helped foster her interest in livestock and veterinary medicine.

A recent graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Savanah Crews is excited to begin her career in large animal medicine with the Brodhead VMC team. Originally from Roscoe Illinois, she is grateful for the opportunity to return to the area and serve the community that helped shape her.

Dr. Crews developed a deep appreciation for agriculture during her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where she became immersed in the farming community. That experience sparked a lasting passion for rural veterinary medicine and strengthened her commitment to supporting producers and their livestock through practical, relationship-focused care.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Crews enjoys spending time outdoors with her 3 year old Australian Shepherd, hiking, kayaking, trail riding, reading, and connecting with family and friends. She’s looking forward to putting down roots in the community and growing both personally and professionally.
