Why add botanicals to your aquarium?
Many fish species we keep in captivity are naturally coming from waterways that have large amounts of organic debris such as leaves, sticks, seed pods, etc. By adding those things into your tank, you are recreating their natural environment; providing natural hiding spots and reducing stress. As the botanicals break down in your tank, they release tannic and humic acids. These acids will naturally lower your pH as well as discolor the water to resemble a “tea”-like color. Lowering pH can be useful in areas like Bozeman, where our water sources generally have a very high pH. The discoloration in the water (known as tannins) will also help to reduce fish stress, and the tannic/humic acids act as a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
Botanicals don’t just affect your water, however. They provide an enormous surface area that beneficial bacteria and biofilms can utilize. These biofilms provide food sources for your bottom-dweller companions such as Cory catfish, plecos, and shrimp as well as help stabilize your water quality.
We love being able to offer such amazing additions to your home aquarium! Stop in and check out the new selection of botanicals today!
