August is National Immunization Awareness Month. We want to highlight the importance of vaccination for dogs and cats. Vaccines are a substance used to stimulate immunity against a particular infectious pathogen (virus or bacteria). Vaccinations contain an inactivated/killed or weakened form of the pathogen in addition to preservatives. Veterinarians incorporate vaccines into your pet’s routine health visits for even basic healthcare. There are certainly various vaccination options available. Categories for vaccines are core and non-core.

Core vaccines are vital to protect animals against serious, potentially fatal diseases. Core vaccines are recommended regardless of age, lifestyle, location, or season. Current core vaccines for dogs include rabies, distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and leptospira. Current core vaccines for pet cats include rabies, leukemia (if your cat is leukemia negative), panleukopenia, calicivirus, and herpesvirus.

Non-core vaccines are optional and dependent on pet’s lifestyle, location, and risk of exposure. Current non-core vaccines for dogs include parainfluenza, bordetella, Lyme disease, and influenza. Current non-core vaccines for pet cats include feline immunodeficiency virus, Chlamydia, and bordetella.

Vaccines not recommended for dogs include coronavirus, Giardia, and Microsporum canis. Vaccines not recommended for pet cats include feline infectious peritonitis, Giardia, and Microsporum canis.

When a pet owner does not want vaccines provided or a pet’s health is in question, there is the option for vaccine titers. Vaccine titers are blood tests to measure the level of antibodies present in the body. Adequate levels indicate the pet has sufficient immunity against a specific antigen. Inadequate levels indicate the pet does not have sufficient immunity and will be susceptible to disease. This results in a recommendation for vaccination. Please note vaccine titers available: 1) dogs include rabies, distemper, and parvovirus 2) cats include rabies, panleukopenia, herpesvirus, and calicivirus.

If you have health concerns for your pet, you and your veterinarian can discuss what vaccine protocol is best for your pet.

Bring the p**p (we're serious).… 👀💩

Even healthy-looking pets can have hidden parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and giardia. Left untreated, parasites can cause diarrhea, weight loss, and even be passed to people. That’s why we recommend f***l testing as part of routine care!

Book your pet’s visit and bring a fresh stool sample. Contact us today!
