The front of the dog-food bag is where the marketing lives.
The back is where you find the information that actually helps you evaluate it. 👀
Here’s my three-part label check:
1. Find the nutritional adequacy statement
Does it say the food is complete and balanced? Is it formulated for your dog’s current life stage?
2. Read the ingredient list
I look for a clearly named whole meat first, like chicken, beef, or turkey. I avoid by-product meals and vague animal ingredients that don’t clearly tell me what they contain or where they came from.
3. Check the feeding chart
Treat it as a starting point, not a prescription. Your dog’s actual needs depend on their age, activity, body condition, and overall health.
And remember, an ingredient list still has limitations. It tells you what was used, but not the quality, digestibility, or exact quantity of every ingredient.
When was the last time you read your big dog’s entire food label? 👇
