A little before and after to brighten your day!
A fellow NPSOT-er wanted something native, resilient to drought, deer, and weather - and of course beautiful. And you gotta admit that even just the hardscaping does it justice!

We came in with a few of my favorite show stopper trees: Palo Verde, Anacacho Orchid, and Texas Redbud - and a great mix of blooms, cactus, and succulent to create structure year-round.

We have a few more plants to add in the spring when it is better for the plant to be introduced.

I'm excited to see this one next Fall!

An example of biodiversity in the city!

San Antonio has done an exceptionally good job at keeping native spaces in their parks.

Here at Classen-Steubing for an early morning soccer practice of course I'm the weirdo poking through the thickets.

So I'm interested to hear from my native plant people.

What do you spy here?

I found myself thoroughly enjoying some good ole internet drama earlier 😂 I won't go into detail, but the gist of it was a difference in opinions on how one should approach educating the community about native plants.

It started a long string of thoughts for me (and a long monologue to my poor, unsuspecting husband and child) which I'd like to share here.

I feel like the areas of conservation - from animals to water to people - have long been attractive to outsiders. I mean, we are the ones fighting for boundaries around our ecosystem in a culture (world?) that puts the word "overconsumption" to shame. We tend to be a little outspoken in our passion for native plants, which can come across as a wee bit intense.

If you need an example just whisper "Crepe Myrtle" in any group of native plant people.

And anyone who knows me knows that I have always surfed the line around normal society. I remember when I moved to Texas 20 years ago, my cowboy uncle in Bandera took one look at my dyed black pixie cut, loud emo music, and more than a few facial piercings and reported that I looked like someone had hit me in the face with a tackle box 😂 Pics upon request ofc.

But let me tell you what I have found in native plants. I have found people spanning generations who are JUST HAPPY to have other people recognize the importance of this work. They don't care how you say it. Most believe in Tallamy's 70/30 rule and won't judge ya for a Mexican Bush Sage.

They recognize that this is possibly the most important time in our history as we bring together science, aesthetics, social media, different cultures, communities, schools, and more to save what we have and give a brighter future to the generations (of people, insects and plants) following us. We are fighting societal norms that have existed for quite some time, and that means we have to band together. Not fight against each other with judgement.

And I guess I'm here to say that I'm really happy I found those people, this knowledge and the diversity of the community. I don't care how many F bombs you drop while saying it. 😂

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! The only picture I took was of my lab being VERY patient for a game of fetch.

I am so thankful for all of you. Those who were there in the beginning - choosing a crazy, passionate lady with no portfolio and grand ideas... And those here now, still choosing a crazy lady with many, many close up pictures of butterflies, bugs, and donkeys 😂 and so many ideas.

One yard at a time we are bringing native plants back to our communities, growing food for our families, and spending time with our hands in the dirt and minds in the clouds ☁️

My gratitude runs full circle in this amazing community. You give me a space to be me, which allows me to bring the best to you ♥️

Thankful for the extensions of my clients who bring so much joy to the work day ♥️

Very excited to see this project come to fruition!

Working with HOA's is always a goal of mine because if we can make the common spaces of neighborhoods native - then we can show residents how great native plants will look in their landscapes!

Not only that - but this type of client truly needs plants that look great, require little maintenance, and are drought and deer resistant!! Tell your HOA to say NO to seasonal wastes that cost a bunch, drink water, and look good for about a week before our early heat sets in.

We will check back in the Spring!

I absolutely texted her right before the shoot to let her know we were all wearing black and I was wearing combat boots... to a Christmas shoot... because I am me.

I haven't done a formal photoshoot since Parker was about 4 months old.

I am not the most graceful, photogenic, or coachable of models 😅

Parker was ... not interested in posing ...

She made this all SO easy. Fluid + uplifting + positive + creative

The results speak for themselves.
