👀An OFA eye exam for dogs (formerly known as a CERF or Canine Eye Registration Foundation exam) is a screening test performed by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist to check for hereditary eye diseases. Responsible breeders use it to ensure their dogs are free of conditions like cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) before breeding.

It amazes me how many people want a certain breed of dog, yet breeders are cruel and shouldn’t breed animals. Here are some facts:

There are responsible breeders. They do health and genetic testing, raise their animals in their home just like a pet, and keep their numbers manageable so their animals have a quality life.

Most dogs in shelters and rescues are not purebred dogs from responsible breeders. They are mixed breeds, whoops litters, and sometimes taken from puppy mills that are discovered and shut down.

Yes, there will always be bad people that ruin something that is supposed to be a wonderful experience for both the breeders and new families. Any responsible breeder will be more than happy to answer any questions you have and will be as transparent as possible with new families. But without breeders, the breed you love may not exist anymore. Please keep that in mind, and be kind to your responsible breeders. They do what they do for the love of the animals and wanting others to be able to experience the joy they have, while making sure their dogs have the best life possible 🩵🐾
