🚨 Pet Safety PSA: Nerf Darts & Cats 🚨

Did you know Nerf darts can be a serious hazard for cats?

Cats are naturally curious and love to chase, chew, and play with small objects—including foam darts. Unfortunately, Nerf darts can be swallowed whole or in pieces, leading to a gastrointestinal obstruction (foreign body). This is a medical emergency that often requires surgery and can quickly become life-threatening if not treated.

In veterinary medicine, this is something we unfortunately do see more often than many people realize. Most pet owners simply don’t know these toys can pose such a risk.

⚠️ Keep Nerf darts picked up and stored away after playtime
⚠️ Monitor pets around children’s toys
⚠️ If your cat is vomiting, not eating, lethargic, or seems painful after possibly ingesting a toy, contact your veterinarian immediately

A little prevention can save your cat from a very scary emergency. Please share to help spread awareness! 🐾

🐾 Leptospirosis: A Hidden Risk for Dogs (and Humans!) 🐾

Did you know that leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that can affect both pets and people? It’s spread through contaminated water, soil, or wildlife urine—meaning even dogs that don’t roam far can be at risk.

💧 How do dogs get it?
• Drinking from puddles, lakes, or standing water
• Contact with wildlife (like raccoons, skunks, or rodents)
• Exposure to contaminated soil—even in your own backyard

⚠️ Why it matters:
Leptospirosis can cause severe kidney and liver damage, and in some cases, it can be life-threatening. Early symptoms can be vague—like lethargy, vomiting, or decreased appetite—making it easy to miss.

💉 The good news? It’s preventable.
Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog and reduce the risk to your family. The leptospirosis vaccine is safe, effective, and especially important here in Minnesota where wildlife exposure is common.

🐶 Our recommendation:
We strongly encourage keeping your dog up-to-date on their leptospirosis vaccine—especially if they spend time outdoors, go on walks, or visit parks.

🐾 Feline Friday! 🐱

Did you know that cats can get ear infections too? 👀

While we often think of ear issues in dogs, our feline friends can also suffer from uncomfortable ear infections caused by yeast, bacteria, or even ear mites. Signs to watch for include:
• Scratching at the ears
• Head shaking
• Dark debris or discharge
• Odor from the ears
• Sensitivity when touched

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, so subtle changes can be easy to miss. If something seems off, it’s always best to have their ears checked early—before it becomes more painful or harder to treat.

If you’re noticing any of these signs, give us a call—we’re here to help keep those kitties happy and healthy! 💙

🐶🌿 Ticks Are Out — Keep Your Pup Safe!

Spring and summer mean ticks are out and about, and even the sweetest backyard pups can get bitten. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis, which can make your dog sick if we don’t catch them early.

💡 Watch for signs:
• Limping or sore joints
• Low energy
• Loss of appetite
• Fever

A simple blood test can catch these diseases before they cause bigger problems — and prevention is always better than treatment!

✅ Keep your dog on tick prevention
✅ Check them after walks or playtime outside
✅ Schedule regular exams

Want to make sure your dog is protected? Give us a call — we’ve got your pup covered! ❤️

🐾 Indoor Cats Need Care Too! 🐾

Just because your cat lives indoors doesn’t mean they’re immune to health risks. In fact, indoor cats still need regular veterinary checkups to stay happy and healthy!

🐱 Indoor cats can still get parasites
🐱 Dental disease is very common (and often hidden!)
🐱 Weight gain and arthritis can sneak up over time
🐱 Early signs of illness are easy to miss

Cats are masters at hiding when something isn’t right — routine exams help us catch problems before they become serious.

Keeping your feline friend up to date on vaccines, preventatives, and wellness exams is one of the best ways to give them a long, healthy life. 💛

📅 If it’s been a while since your cat’s last visit, give us a call — we’d love to see them!
