When members of the Farmacy program come to the BUF each week, they get not just a box of fresh nutrient-dense produce, but often a sample of a simple preparation of some of the items. Last time, Therese made little kabobs of patio choice tomato, Corinto cucumber, mozzarella cheese and an olive, drizzled with her balsamic vinegar dressing. A big hit, although some of the younger participants were less impressed. The blackberries were a hit with all ages.

Available at the farm sales table, 201 Adams. Also freshly dug garlic, either Music or German Extra-Hardy, $2/head. This has not been cured for storage, so use it soon. All proceeds support the educational programs of the Berea Urban Farm.

Crystal has been harvesting blueberries and garlic. We love these because (1) they taste great, (2) they are superfoods that support the health of our Farmacy Program members, and (3) most of the work to grow them was done last year or earlier. The garlic (German Extra-hardy) was planted in October, and the blueberries (Northern highbush) about 10 years ago.

We recently received a load of leaf-based (as opposed to manure-based) compost. We use it to top up or amend the older soil in our raised beds and other growing areas. We make it available to local gardeners who need a small amount of good compost. The price is $5 for a 5-gallon bucket full, which is basically our cost. Limit 5 or 6 buckets per purchase. The Sustainable Berea office at 107 Grant Street is staffed M-R, 9am to 2pm. Call 859-985-1689 to make other arrangements. We also have a 50/50 soil/compost blend.

We covered our cabbage transplants with Agri-bon row cover to provide some cold-weather protection, then left the cover on for insect protection. It has been awhile since we looked, so today was the unveiling. Nestled among the weeds were a lot of cabbages with minimal insect damage. The variety is Tendersweet. Slaw anyone?
