This honey bee is drinking from a small leak in the BUF drip irrigation system. During the next few minutes, a steady procession of bees was observed, drinking and taking water back to the hive. On a hot day, a hive can use 1-2 gallons of water for evaporative cooling. If you would like to help bees and other insects, you can set out a shallow pan of water filled with small rocks (bees drown easily).

At the annual Winter Gathering in February, Jeanne Marie was the winning bidder for an evening on the BUF roasting Hatch chiles with Al White. Al is a New Mexican so chiles are in his blood. The BUF Hatch chile harvest is underway, so we fired up the propane roaster. The farm never smelled so good. We grew and roasted two varieties -- Hatch Big Jim (medium heat) and NM-64 (mild).

We are growing Tohya soybean for edamame. We planted it a month later than scheduled, so it is just now ready for harvest. The yields and quality are good. On the roots you can see the nodules that the plant makes to house Rhizobium bacteria. The soybean supplies food to the bacteria and the bacteria converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that the plant can use. A win-win symbiosis. And for us, we boil the pods in salt water until they are bright green and readily pop open (often when they float to the surface). Then strain, let cool a bit, and squeeze the pod to pop the beans into your mouth.

So Therese said "I wonder if that bed of carrots we planted in the spring has produced?" Well, it has! George and Therese did a first harvest, and our Farmacy CSA members will be enjoying some tasty carrots in tomorrow's box. This particular bed receives a fair amount of shade, which may have helped in the recent heat.
