On this day 24 years ago, over 300 search and rescue dogs across North America were deployed to New York City. These dogs, alongside their supportive human handlers, worked in 12-hour shifts.

During the dogs’ downtime, their handlers noticed they were natural therapy dogs. They provided comfort and support to the first responders at Ground Zero.

Today, we honor their service and remember the healing presence animals bring in our most difficult moments. 💙

“Kitty Cat and I just had the nicest visit. We had barely come through the door when we were mobbed by the staff. Then one of the staff went to collect a woman who was walking herself down the hall in her wheelchair. I put Kitty Cat in her lap and S. sat quietly for 40 minutes. The staff members were amazed. S. even smiled and began to talk. Evidently this lady had chronic anxiety and wandered the halls all day. This was the first time that she was physically quiet and looked content. So cool!”

Stories like these show just how powerful the human–animal bond can be. 💛

👭🐾 Family makes every step sweeter.

Two sisters are walking (and fundraising!) in the World’s Largest Pet Walk with their therapy dog, Mochi. They started volunteering because they wanted to share his love with their community, and now they’re raising funds together to support more therapy animal teams like theirs.

Mochi’s favorite pastime? Meeting kids at the bus stop and chasing tennis balls. But this September, he’ll be walking with his family to bring smiles to even more people.

When you volunteer with Pet Partners, you’re never on this journey alone.

Our handlers give so much to their communities, and we believe in giving back to them, too. One way we do that is through our Cancer Care Fund, which provides financial assistance if a therapy animal in our program is diagnosed with cancer.

Just ask Jake’s handler, Lynn. Jake spent eight incredible years visiting nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and more. When he faced cancer, the Cancer Care Fund helped cover the cost of his care, bringing peace of mind during a challenging time.

It’s one of the many ways we care for the teams who care for others. When you join Pet Partners, you gain not just opportunities to serve, but a community that supports you and your pet every step of the way.
