🤠 6 Days to the Cowgirl Ball!

🩷 Today we recognize our 2011 Cowgirl of the Year, Kate Brown!

Kate Brown has had a long and eventful career in politics, having been appointed to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1991. She was elected to the Oregon State Senate in 1996 and was then elected Majority Leader in 2003. In 2009 Brown became the first female Secretary of State of Oregon, and in 2015 she succeeded John Kitzhaber as Governor. No stranger to breaking glass ceilings, Brown is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to a statewide office and the first openly LGBTQ person elected governor of a U.S. State. Throughout her career, Brown has led successful efforts to make Oregon’s state government more open and accessible, as well as to protect the natural beauty of Oregon. In 2024, Brown became President of the Willamette Falls Trust.

🤠 7 Days to the Cowgirl Ball!

🩷 Today we recognize our 2009 Cowgirl of the Year, Donna Birtwistle!

Retired Army Staff Sgt. Donna Birtwistle was deeply moved when she learned in the spring of 2008 that over one hundred military women had died in Iraq. She asked herself, “am I supposed to just let this go by?” Her answer was no. Over the course of six weeks, Birtwistle gathered a group of 25 to 30 women in her hometown of Moro, Oregon, and, together, created a patchwork quilt commemorating the 113 U.S. military women who had died during the global war on terrorism. The quilt was unveiled at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery where it was first displayed until it was moved for display at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals. We recognize Birtwistle’s care and fortitude, and honor her memory.

🤠 9 Days to the Cowgirl Ball!

🩷 Today we recognize our 2007 Cowgirl of the Year, Arlene Schnitzer!

A titan of philanthropy in Portland, Arlene Schnitzer was passionate about fostering artistic, educational, and social service excellence throughout the Northwest. She left an indelible mark on local arts organizations such as the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon Ballet Theatre, and the Oregon Symphony, as well as giving back to organizations such as the Northwest Academy, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland, and the Oregon Health & Sciences University Foundation. Together with her husband, Harold, Mrs. Schnitzer co-founded the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation which supports arts and culture, youth, educational, medical, social service, and community activities that enhance quality of life. Forward Stride has been the recipient of the Schnitzer’s generosity when we moved to our current facility, as well as through grants from the Schnitzer CARE Foundation. Jordan Schnitzer carries on the legacy of his late parents and their belief that “to whom much is given, much is expected.” We honor Arlene Schnitzer’s memory.
