December Impact Report!

Pokey’s Pet Pantry helped more than 74 families in need. Not included in our report are families who utilized the emergency overnight bins which would put the number well past 100.

In December, volunteer Caycia helped launch an inventory and request system that allows us to better understand the impact we are making with our pantry efforts and meet the requested needs more efficiently.

The new system has been working exceptionally well, and allowing us to help more families from a small space, utilizing a small setup.

We are so grateful for Caycia and all the help the pantry has received to keep growing and keep helping families on the Westside and beyond 🐾

Families needing help right now were driven by circumstances that ranged from being completely houseless to being short of a paycheck by a few days to starting a new job in a few weeks, to name a few.

Times are hard right now but we want to do our part in helping keep pets and families together and it isn’t possible without your help and your continued support 💞

On 1/2/26, there were reports that ICE was active on or near the Aloha Costco here in Beaverton where they detained an individual

This is highly concerning. I do a fair amount of business at this Costco and I know a lot of you do as well.

As every concerned citizen (customer or otherwise) should do, I called and spoke with a store manager, shortly after 8 am.

The following video is our conversation.

My takeaways are these:

•ICE is not allowed in the Costco warehouse (the store itself) but the parking lot itself was carefully left out of statements. Costco is a membership only store meaning without a membership card, you would be turned away at the door. However, there is contention about the parking lot and if ICE should have any access to the parking lot because it is private property belonging to a membership only store.

•The local police were called per Standard Operating Procedure (Beaverton Police Department) and responded in a time of satisfaction according to the manager

•Costco Corporate has SOP’s in place for all Costco stores which primarily involve calling police

•My question asking if the Migra Watch members were asked to leave, simply for blowing whistles and alerting community members of nearby ICE activity, I was not provided a direct answer.

•There was mention about keeping customers and employees safe but also remaining neutral. I personally do not believe Costco can approach this with a mutually exclusive mindset. As yesterday’s events proved- it is impossible to remain neutral and keep vulnerable community members safe. The Migra Watch members were subtly accused of causing “chaos” when witness testimony counters these claims

Corporate Costco has been made aware. Whether they will release a statement depends on social media response to yesterday’s events and how many of you all continue to call and express your personal concerns

2025- how it started and how it ended. This reel was hard to make. I debated sharing with you all the last clip especially. It didn’t deserve a platform to be shared but I wanted to juxtapose the beginning and the end of this year in a way that would be symbolic because at the beginning of this year, when the Oval Office switched hands, we were different people back then too. So much had changed now. And there really is no going back. I don’t know what 2026 has in store for us but I know what is worth fight for and I hope you do too.

My dog Rigby has been showing her age lately, mostly through her careful selection of which squirrels to chase and which ones to leave alone. A few years ago, all squirrels would be worth a good chase 😅

Rigby is a dog that would not pass behavior checks at most government shelters because she becomes withdrawn when under stress, she can take time to warm up to new friends, and she prefers her space and independence over a robust social circle

And while most government shelters wouldn’t think twice about killing her, I have happily and easily provided her with a life of love and companionship

So many of us have opened our doors to dogs like Rigby and yet our governments continue to kill dogs like Rigby every day

Rigby was worth saving. I’ll never feel any other way about that and I know a lot of you feel that way about your pets too

How did we get here?

The way Tony was treated at the Tacoma Detention Center? It didn’t happen overnight.

It’s years of the public turning a blind eye to how our immigrants have been historically treated in these centers.

The information is not buried, we were always too busy.

Maybe preoccupied with other subjects we were passionate about. Maybe we didn’t read the article about that one case that happened long ago. Maybe we just assumed that because there is an oversight committee, everything is on the up and up? Maybe it is up to someone else but that someone else never me?

Can we really go back now? Because if you agree that what happened to Tony is an injustice than we also have to agree that this injustice has been fueled for some time and we are all culpable when we decided that we only started caring recently when things go so incredibly out of control that we felt we had no other choice.

What are these screenshots from? Audits of the Tacoma detention center. I also added links in our bio for the full report (all open data).

Key findings:

•Audits are done once a year. The last one was done back in January so we should be due for one soon

•Audits are done by the office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman (OIDO)

•The sample size is so incredibly small that it really is an unfair assessment in my opinion. For example, in 2020, there was an average of 858 individuals being held with only 12 being interviewed- that’s not even a 2% sample size

•There is a inspection report for 2014 and no reports available in the open library for years: 2015, 2016, and 2017 and year “2019” is completely missing from the library for all documents. Reports pick back up in 2020 and stay fiscally current up until this year (2025)

•Current mentions of beds and capacities are redacted. 2012 and 2020 had that information available.

In even small samples we are seeing violations that include mishandling of sexual misconduct, complaints about food portions, not enough toilets per person, etc.

Knowledge is power. Do we go on like this? Or do we reform?
