Deer tick season is coming to Beaver Island, and it arrives faster than most people expect. As the snow melts and temperatures climb above freezing, deer ticks become active. On an island with a thriving deer population, that means our dogs and cats are at real risk, and so are we. Deer ticks on Beaver Island are known carriers of Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis. We see cases every year that could have been prevented.

Dr. Felster is veterinarian from the thumb area in Michigan who studied at Iowa State University and completed an internship at Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic. She specializes in equine and small-animal medicine, especially internal medicine, lameness, reproduction, and wellness. She has worked with equine, canine, and feline patients in mixed animal practice and is active in groups like 4-H and pre-vet clubs. She is involved in serval professional associates (AAEP, AVMA, MVMA) and serves on the Michigan Equine Practitioners Committee. Outside of work she enjoys football, outdoor activities with her husband, and spending time with her dog. Each summer she partners with Iowa State and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota to provide free equine care and teaches veterinary students.
