Since Senna has apparently introduced herself to half the internet, I figured it was time you met Cherry.

Cherry is hands down the best detection dog I’ve ever worked. I imported her completely green, trained her myself, and now she performs real world searches. Her hunt drive, independence, and work ethic are unreal. This dog takes her job VERY seriously.

She also has some very questionable morals.

Cherry stepped off the plane and immediately tried to eat me. She hadn’t even cleared customs before deciding I was an unfortunate obstacle to her future success.

We’ve come a long way since then, and yes, she genuinely loves me now. It only took a tremendous amount of work and a few years off my life expectancy.

This dog would trade every organ in my body for a Kong, but absolutely REFUSES to accept that Kong until she’s found something.

Apparently, selling my organs is perfectly reasonable, but accepting payment for work she hasn’t done is a disgrace to her profession.

All jokes aside, I trust this dog completely. Her nose, her judgment, her ability to work independently. When the stakes are high, there’s not another dog I’d rather have beside me.

I built her from the ground up, and she’s everything I could have hoped for in a working dog.

I trust her with my life.

My organs however, remain negotiable.

I am currently being held hostage by a pregnant Belgian Malinois named Senna.

Every morning she wakes up absolutely furious that there are fi****ms in this world she hasn’t personally located.

We do searches. We do obedience. We do more searches. She gets her ball. We go inside.

Five minutes later, she’s standing in front of me, staring directly into my soul, waiting for me to explain why the entire detection industry has shut down at 2:37 on a Tuesday.

I cannot sit down. I cannot eat lunch. I cannot even use the bathroom without a heavily pregnant Belgian Malinois appearing in the doorway to investigate why the hell we’re not working.

This dog is approximately 56 days pregnant, built like a propane tank with legs, and still operates like she’s three missed paychecks away from losing her house.

Her puppies are probably in there hanging onto the umbilical cords for dear life while their mother attempts to clock another 8 hour shift.

I genuinely believe if I hid a fi***rm in the garage at 3 AM, she’d come through the bedroom wall like the Kool Aid Man, locate it, sit, collect her ball, and demand another assignment before the drywall hit the floor.

I have tried explaining maternity leave.

She has declined.

Enjoy your dog.

Life is short, and I think sometimes we forget that when we’re so focused on training, correcting behaviors, and working toward the next goal.

Especially with working dogs, there’s always something to improve. Another skill to develop, another standard to meet, another thing we could be doing better.

But sometimes it’s okay to do absolutely nothing. Take the longer walk. Let them sniff everything. Sit outside together without turning it into a training opportunity.

Your dog doesn’t know what titles are, how much money you spent, or what expectations you had when you brought them home.

They just know the life they get to live.

And one day, when they’re no longer here, you won’t be thinking about that obedience session you skipped or the training goal you didn’t reach.

You’ll be wishing you had one more completely ordinary day with them.

Don’t spend their entire life preparing them to be the dog you want and forget to enjoy the dog you have.

UPDATE: Kyra found a home! 😂

Against all odds, someone read about her questionable brain cells, emotional support sprinkler, and unauthorized landscaping business and STILL wanted her.

We wish her new family the best of luck and strongly recommend they bolt down anything weighing less than 75 pounds.

Meet Kyra. Bred and raised here, located in Maine, turning 2 in January, passed all her health testing with flying colors, and unfortunately didn’t quite have the grit I was looking for in my working dog program.

What she DOES have is the personality of a drunk raccoon at a county fair and approximately three functioning brain cells, two of which are currently fighting over custody of the third. She’s a massive, lovable goofball who wakes up every morning with absolutely no idea what she’s doing but enough enthusiasm to make it everybody else’s problem.

Need your blueberry bushes relocated? She’ll have them excavated before you finish your coffee. Roots included. No appointment necessary.

Enjoy playing fetch? Wonderful! Kyra will happily retrieve a ball, a stick, or the entire gutter off the side of your house. She’s not picky.

She also has an emotional support sprinkler. A METAL SPRINKLER. I’ve provided this dog with hundreds of dollars in toys, and she’s chosen agricultural equipment.

Kyra is extremely social, affectionate, goofy, and has ridiculous toy drive. She’s wonderful in the house, e-collar trained, crate trained, heels beautifully on leash, has had tons of public exposure, and has done well with the dogs she’s met. She knows sit, down, and stay. We’re still working on stay because apparently the union requires additional compensation for remaining stationary.

I’d love to find a veteran or experienced, active adult who wants a hiking buddy, adventure partner, and someone to help inspect every single tree in the forest.

She’s been great with kids, but she’s still a 75-pound enthusiastic puppy who jumps, can get mouthy, and occasionally forgets that other people are not wearing protective football equipment.

All jokes aside, Kyra is a beautiful, healthy, fun dog with a ton to offer the right person. She’s simply not the right fit for my program, and I’d rather see her out enjoying life with someone who appreciates everything she is.

Maine Working Dogs has limited availability remaining for our obedience-focused Board & Train programs before the end of the year.

1 Week Board & Train — $500

Ideal for introducing foundational obedience or improving existing skills. Training focuses on sit, down, stay, recall, leash manners, engagement, and everyday obedience.

2 Week Board & Train — $950

A more comprehensive obedience program allowing additional time to develop and reinforce skills. Includes foundational obedience, leash work, impulse control, recall, and practicing commands around distractions to build greater consistency and reliability.

Weekend Mini Board & Train — $200

Perfect for a quick obedience refresher or focused work on one or two specific skills. Great for dogs that already have some training but could benefit from additional structure and practice.

Every program includes one free private lesson at handoff, where we go over everything your dog has learned and teach you how to maintain that training at home.

I also provide unlimited ongoing support directly from me after your dog goes home. Whether you have questions, need guidance, or want help continuing your dog’s progress, I’m available to help. My commitment to your dog’s success doesn’t end at pickup.

Please note that these programs are strictly for obedience training. We do not offer behavioral modification for aggression, reactivity, or other significant behavioral concerns.

Effective immediately, Maine Working Dogs will no longer place dogs in sport only homes.

To clarify, sport-only homes are not the same as homes that participate in dog sports while providing their dogs with fulfilling lives outside of competition. We have no issue with dog sports; we simply will not place dogs in homes where training, titles, and competition are their entire existence.

We breed for ourselves first and for legitimate operational work, including law enforcement, detection, search and rescue, and personal protection. Our dogs are not produced for competition, titles, or sporting recognition.

We would far rather place a suitable dog in a responsible family protection home, where the owners are committed to investing the time, training, structure, and continued development that the dog requires, than place it in a competitive environment that does not align with our program. A working dog deserves more than simply being worked. It deserves capable ownership, appropriate care, and a meaningful life outside of training.

Our responsibility to these dogs does not end when ownership changes hands. We brought them into this world, we decide where they go, and we have to live with those decisions.
