Good job Maze and her handler Matt! Amazing team who puts a lot into their training.
*** PRESS RELEASE ***
At 6:20pm Saturday evening (7/12), Sunderland Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a lost hiker in the woods on Mount Toby reservation. Sunderland Fire responded with our Humvee Utility vehicle, UTV, ATV, and our rescue K9’s, Ranger and Maze.
We were able to get a Cell phone “ping” from the missing individual’s phone which gave us a general location, roughly 2.5 miles from the Base of Mount Toby. Due to the hot temperatures, and length of time the individual had been gone for, the decision was made to deploy K9 Maze in an Air Scent search.
Upon deploying K9 Maze, her nose brought her in a different direction away from where the ping seemed to show on the map. FF Manheim, accompanied by LT Jones, trusted the dog's training and followed Maze. Within 20 minutes the pair had traveled roughly 1 mile over increasingly steep, difficult terrain, and K9 Maze successfully located the missing individual. The hiker was assisted back to the large trail where the Utility vehicle was parked and driven out of the woods.
Maze definitely was a time and potentially life saving asset. We are so happy to have her and her brother Ranger as resources for Sunderland and the surrounding communities.
When you find yourself lost in the woods, please call 911 and stay in one spot. We have the tools and training to get you out safely.
