Congratulations to our August Basic Manners graduates!

Over the past several weeks, these teams have been working on the skills that make everyday life with our dogs easier. Along the way, they’ve also been learning how to communicate more clearly and work together as a team.

One of the easiest ways to improve your training is to take a closer look at your rewards.

We tend to decide what SHOULD be rewarding to our dogs. But your dog is the one who gets to decide whether something is actually worth working for.

A piece of kibble might work perfectly in your kitchen but be completely irrelevant when you're outside and a squirrel runs past. That doesn't necessarily mean your dog is being stubborn or refusing to listen. The environment just got harder, and the reward you're offering may no longer be valuable enough.

Think of rewards as having different values. Kibble might be fine for easy work. A favorite treat may be better when distractions increase. For some dogs, a toy, permission to sniff, chasing a tossed treat, or getting to go through the door can be even more valuable than food.

And remember that the difficulty of the exercise matters too. If you constantly need better and better treats just to keep your dog working, it may be a sign that you're asking for too much.

Good training isn't just about finding a reward your dog likes. It's about matching the reward AND the difficulty of the exercise to the situation you're training in.

Finished Basic Manners? You don't have to stop there!

Advanced Manners is the next step for dogs who have the foundation but need more practice using those skills when life gets interesting.

We'll gradually increase distractions, distance, duration, and difficulty while continuing to use positive reinforcement to keep training fun and successful.

And because our classes are small, you'll get individualized help figuring out what YOUR dog needs as the exercises get harder.

Keep the momentum going and build skills that hold up beyond the classroom.

Look at all of these Basic Manners graduates!

These teams spent six weeks working on attention, self-control, polite manners, and other skills they can use at home and out in the real world. Most importantly, they learned how to work together and build on those skills long after class is over.
