⚠️ Copperhead Snake Advisory – Ten Mile River Area near Milk Street

The City has received reports of a potentially dangerous snake sighting near the Ten Mile River by Milk Street. The snake is believed to be a copperhead, a venomous species not commonly found in our region.

🐾 Pet Owners: Please use extreme caution when walking pets in this area.

Keep pets leashed at all times

Avoid tall grass, brush, and leaf piles, where snakes may hide

🐍 About Copperhead Bites
While copperhead bites are rarely fatal, they can cause significant pain, swelling, and potential complications if not treated promptly.

If you see a snake you suspect is a copperhead, or if your pet is bitten, please take the following steps:

🚨 Snakebite Emergency – What To Do
If your pet is bitten by a copperhead:

1. Stay Calm & Restrict Movement
Keep your pet as calm and still as possible to slow the spread of venom.

2. Immobilize the Affected Limb
Gently keep the bitten limb immobilized at or slightly below heart level.

3. Clean the Area
If possible, rinse the area with mild soap and water to help reduce infection risk.
⚠️ Do NOT apply ice, which can worsen tissue damage.

4. Remove Tight Gear
Remove collars, harnesses, or anything near the bite site in case of swelling.

5. DO NOT

-Apply a tourniquet

-Attempt to suck out the venom

-Cut the wound

-Administer any medications without veterinary advice

6. Seek Emergency Care Immediately

🔦 National Pet Preparedness Month is the perfect time to create a blackout kit for your furry family!

Include glow sticks (safer than candles around curious pets), pet-safe battery-powered nightlights, extra LED collar lights, and comfort items.

Remember that routine changes and strange shadows can increase anxiety during power outages. Keep pets contained in one room to prevent escapes if doors or windows need to be opened for ventilation. ⚡🐈🐕
