Back Street Kittens

Back Street Kittens We are a small feral kitten rescue working to help decrease the feral cat population Since we started, we have saved about 200 kittens/cats.

The “Back” story
BACK STREET KITTENS
Back Street Kittens was founded by Teresa Kern in Duluth, Georgia in Feb. 2019. We are a very small rescue that does what we can to help feral kittens and their moms. As of September this year, we have made the decision to no longer do any intake. We have several kittens/cats that need homes so we are concentrating on getting them adopted. Once we have adopted

out all that are adoptable, we will become a sanctuary so the remaining BSK's will have a safe place to live out their life. If you have adopted from us and can no longer care for the cat, we will still take them back as they will always be a Back Street Kitten.

I just recently had a cat returned within 48 hours because she wasn't adjusting! The irony is......we had discussed this rule and she seemed to understand. Guess not. The cat is happy to be back with me.

Meow, Clowder!

Adopting a rescue cat is a beautiful act of compassion, but it’s also a journey. Many humans don’t realize how much time a rescued feline truly needs to feel safe. That’s where the 3-3-3 Rule comes in:

🐾 3 Days: To decompress
🐾 3 Weeks: To start settling in
🐾 3 Months: To feel truly at home

In the first few days, your new cat may hide, hiss, or seem disoriented. Don’t panic; it’s all part of the process. By three weeks, routines begin to form. After three months? You’ll start to see their true personality unfold.

Patience is the ultimate love language. Let them bloom in their own time, and you’ll earn a bond that’s deep, trusting, and unbreakable.

This is where Tippy usually is when it is time for a meal. From here, he can watch me get trays ready and yell at me if I am taking too long.

I picked up Tippy at lunch time and brought him to work with me. Temperature is normal and no blockages found. We gave him an antibiotic shot and a cerenia shot which will calm an upset stomach. He initially wasn't interested in any food I offered him. I told him if he didn't start eating, I would have to syringe feed him. 10 minutes later, I caught him eating the Temptation treats! I guess he understood me. I will be monitoring his temperature and making sure he eats.

It is Tuesday night at 11:41 pm. I just finished giving Tippy subq fluids. I noticed that he was not in his usual place for supper tonite and when I went to pick up empty bowls, I realized that he did not eat. This is not normal for him. I found him in my bedroom laying in an unusual spot so I took his temp and it was just a little high, 102.8. I put him in the catio to separate him from the other cats and so I can monitor food and litterbox usage. I offered 4 different high value wet food along with temptation treats. No interest. I checked his temp at 11 and it was up to 103.8 and he hasn't eaten anything. I found my fluid bag and watched the video on how to set it up since I haven't had to do that for awhile. Got it all setup and went and got Tippy. I figured he would put up a fight but I guess being allowed in the kitchen was enough of a treat that he was very calm. Put him on the clean towel I had put on the counter, made the little tent, poked him with the needle and proceeded to give him about 100 ml of fluids. He just laid there like nothing was happening. Once he had a good bubble, I stopped. He is now back in the catio and I am going to try to get a little sleep. I will be up to check his temp in about 2 hours and will give more fluids if needed. We will be going to the vet in the morning.
Please send healing prayers for sweet Tippy.

Update on Duke: I couldn't bring myself to post this yesterday but Duke got his angel wings yesterday morning. Saturday night he took a turn for the worse and we were in the vets office first thing Sunday morning. After an exam and discussing the possible testing we could do and what the expected outcome would be, we decided the most humane thing to do was let him go peacefully instead of putting him through all the tests just to lose him anyway. Duke and his siblings were the inspiration for me starting Back Street Kittens. He was such a sweet boy and the house is quieter without him. Fly high sweet boy. I know my other cats were there to greet you when you got to the Rainbow Bridge.

UPDATE: 10:07 am The vet just called. Looks like he will have to have 6 extractions. Bill will be around $1000.00. Please help with a small donation if you can. It will be very much appreciated.

Dropped Prince off at the vet this morning for his dental. He will probably need several extractions so the bill is going to be expensive. We would appreciate donations to help pay for this!

This is Mr Gray. He is a sweet boy who loves human attention. He likes to be held and carried around like a baby. He doesn't like other cats so he needs to be an only cat. He is FIV + which isn't a big deal. He is healthy and as an indoor only cat, he will probably live a long healthy life. He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. His adoption fee has been sponsored.

Please have some compassion for these animals. They are the way they are because a human/humans have let them down.

Friends.. This information is very important to know.!!! When you see a dirty cat.. This is important information to know, why cats look dirty.

🔺 Cats can resist hunger for up to a week on average, but no more than 2-3 days in case of thirst.

🔺 Cats are usually very clean, they are groomed several times a day, if you see a cat that is not clean, it is DEHYDRATED and has been so for many days.

Their saliva glands are not functioning properly, because they require moisture.!!!.

🔺 Please, if you see a stray kitten, apparently dirty, do not run, or look at it with disgust, it has already had difficult days.. In which I probably haven’t eaten or drank any water for a long time!!!. If you don’t like cats, express kindness out of compassion.!!

🔺 For humanity, empathy, and love for your neighbor, bring food and above all a container with WATER. It’s not easy being thirsty and hungry and not being able to say a word! 💔🥺

I took Prince home last night. He is still not acting like himself and he did not want to eat. I gave him the appetite stimulant and finally got him to eat about 3/4 of a Lil Soup. He slept on my pillow most of the night which is normal for him. This morning, he did not want normal food but he did eat a whole Lil Soup. When I left, he had settled back on my pillow and was napping.

His bill yesterday was $959.71. So far, we have only raised about $100.00. We would appreciate your help with this bill.

UPDATE: Heard from the vet around 12:45 pm. Blood work looks good, kidney and liver functions are normal. Urine is marginally off but not concerning. X-rays didn't show anything concerning. They are going to give fluids, B12, convenia and an appetite stimulant and I will pick him up this evening. The plan is to monitor him for 48 hours and if no improvement, he will go back for more testing. He does need a dental so we will have to raise the funds for that. Thank you to the people who have donated so far. Much appreciated!

Okay prayer warriors, we need help. I dropped Prince off at the vet this morning. He has been vomiting and it looks like he might have blood in his urine. He has lost 5 pounds since his last vet visit and his temperature was 98.8 this morning which is not good. Still waiting to hear from the vet but prayers would be much appreciated. He is one of the reasons that I started this rescue. His momma brought him and his 4 siblings to me to take care of. Two of the girls were adopted and we still have Duke, Daisy and Prince. We could also use monetary help as I know this visit is going to be expensive. I approved blood work, urine analysis and x-rays when I dropped him off.
