Rabies awareness belongs in the pet travel conversation because travel creates movement, movement creates contacts, and contact history becomes critical during any exposure investigation.

A recent rabies-positive shelter dog case in Dallas, Georgia — just outside Atlanta — is a reminder that movement history matters.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, officials had not confirmed where or when the dog was exposed. That is exactly why these questions are important:

Where has the animal been?
Who handled the animal?
Were there bites, wounds, wildlife encounters, or behavior changes?
Are vaccine records current and verified?

Pet travel is not only about transportation.

Whether a pet moves by car, shelter transport, rescue transfer, or aircraft, health history, vaccine verification, and exposure risk should be part of the conversation.

This is not about fear.

It is about awareness, documentation, and protecting people and pets.

“Pet friendly” is a marketing term. In air travel, pets are welcome only when regulations, safety procedures, airline policies, and destination requirements are met.

Air travel involves noise, confinement, handling, environmental changes, security screening, and documentation requirements.

Airlines do not prepare pets for travel or determine whether they are medically fit to fly.

That preparation begins before the trip — with the pet owner and the veterinarian.
