March 23 is National Puppy Day 🐶💛
Today we’re celebrating the wiggly tails, oversized paws, and endless kisses that make puppyhood so special. It’s also the perfect reminder that early veterinary care — including oral exams — plays a big role in setting puppies up for a lifetime of health.
Those tiny baby teeth may be cute, but monitoring eruption, retained deciduous teeth, and bite alignment early can help prevent discomfort and dental issues down the road.
Here’s to healthy starts, happy smiles, and all the puppy snuggles. 🐾🦷✨
Drop a photo of your puppy below — we’d love to see them!

A Class I malocclusion (also called neutroclusion) occurs when the jaw alignment is normal, but one or more teeth are in abnormal positions. In young pets, retained or abnormally positioned deciduous (baby) teeth can prevent permanent teeth from erupting correctly.
Early extraction of these deciduous teeth is often the key to resolution. When addressed promptly, it allows the adult teeth time to drift into a more natural position while the jaw still has maximum growth potential and plasticity.
Waiting too long can mean the malposition becomes permanent — and may require more advanced orthodontic or surgical intervention later.
If you notice crowded, rotated, or displaced teeth in your puppy or kitten, a veterinary dental evaluation can make all the difference.
📞 Early assessment. Healthier bite. Better future.

March is Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month 🐾
Many everyday household items can be dangerous for pets — even in small amounts. From certain human foods and medications to plants, cleaners, and supplements, accidental exposures happen more often than most pet parents realize.
Common toxins include:
• Chocolate & xylitol
• Human medications (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
• Grapes & raisins
• Lilies (especially dangerous for cats)
• Household cleaners and essential oils
If you ever suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian immediately or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
A few simple precautions — secure storage, checking ingredients, and knowing what’s toxic — can make all the difference.
Prevention saves lives. 💚🐶🐱

Meet Ronin 🐾🦷 — one of our recent (very cute) dental patients!
Dr. Wood evaluated Ronin for a Class I malocclusion, meaning his upper and lower jaws were aligned normally, but one tooth was displaced. In his case, he had a base narrow deciduous right mandibular canine (804) — a baby tooth positioned too far toward the tongue.
When deciduous (baby) teeth are abnormally positioned, early extraction is key. Removing them promptly gives the permanent teeth the best opportunity to move into a healthier position while the jaws are still growing and have the most plasticity.
Ronin also had a deep palatal depression just behind the upper right lateral incisor. The trauma from tooth contact had progressed enough to create a draining tract along the outer gum surface. Due to the damage, the affected incisor (503) was extracted to resolve the source of infection and discomfort.
Early intervention in developing malocclusions can prevent long-term pain, infection, and more complex orthodontic or surgical procedures later on.
We’ll be seeing Ronin back for rechecks — and we have more cases coming soon to share! 🐶✨

Feline stomatitis is far more than mild gum irritation — it’s a severe, painful oral disease that can greatly impact your cat’s comfort, appetite, and quality of life.
This condition causes widespread inflammation of the gums and mouth tissues, often making eating extremely painful. Cats with stomatitis may drool excessively, develop mouth ulcers, avoid food, or show noticeable behavior changes due to chronic pain.
🚩 Signs to watch for:
• Red, inflamed gums or ulcers
• Excessive drooling
• Difficulty eating or food avoidance
• Poor oral hygiene
• Changes in behavior or mood
At Veterinary Dental Center of Atlanta, our team focuses on early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment to reduce pain, manage inflammation, and improve your cat’s day-to-day comfort.
If your cat is showing signs of oral pain, a veterinary dental exam can make a life-changing difference. 🐱💙

Canine stomatitis is more than bad breath or a sore tooth — it’s a painful inflammatory condition that affects a dog’s mouth, gums, and overall quality of life.
This condition is often linked to an overactive immune response to plaque and can cause severe inflammation, difficulty eating, drooling, weight loss, and chronic pain if left untreated.
🚩 Signs to watch for:
• Red, inflamed gums
• Foul breath
• Trouble eating or refusing food
• Pawing at the mouth
• Drooling or blood-tinged saliva
Early diagnosis makes a big difference. If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, a veterinary dental exam can help identify the cause and create a treatment plan to restore comfort and health.
A healthy mouth means a happier, pain-free pup. 🐶💙

Did you know puppies and kittens can sometimes keep their baby teeth even after adult teeth erupt?
These are called persistent (retained) deciduous teeth, and two teeth should never occupy the same space. When this happens, it can lead to crowding, pain, inflammation, infection, tartar buildup, and even bone loss if left untreated.
At Veterinary Dental Center of Atlanta, we commonly see persistent teeth in small-breed dogs like Toy Poodles, Maltese, and Yorkies. If you notice small “punk” teeth sitting next to adult teeth, bad breath, chewing difficulties, or red and irritated gums, it’s time for a dental check-up.
We’re here to protect your pet’s comfort and keep their smile healthy. 💙
