Tater is running out of chances to be seen.

He did everything we asked of him.

Tater completed his basic obedience training. He went to a home. He tried his best.

Unfortunately, the adoption wasn’t the right fit because the resident dog struggled with adding another sibling to the family.

Now he’s back at the shelter.

We see it all the time, and it’s heartbreaking. Dogs who finally get a taste of home life and then find themselves back in a kennel often change. The confusion sets in. The disappointment. The depression. The sparkle starts to fade.

We’re watching that happen to Tater, and we desperately want to stop it before he becomes just another dog waiting behind a kennel door.

Tater is a young shepherd mix with so much to offer. He’s smart, eager to learn, and has already completed professional basic obedience training. His future family won’t be doing it alone either—thanks to our partners at The Dog Wizard, Tater’s adopters will receive lifetime support to help him continue succeeding.

Tater is dog-social and enjoys canine companionship, but he’d do best with a dog that matches his play style and energy level. A similarly sized, active dog around his age would be ideal.

He’s not looking for perfection.

He’s looking for commitment.

A family willing to continue the work that’s already been started. A family willing to see him for more than a shelter dog. A family willing to make sure he never has to experience this heartbreak again.

Please share Tater. His next home needs to be his last. 🖤🐾

Welcome, Bevo!

This magnificent shepherd mix was never reclaimed from stray hold. He’s a true gentle giant and loves to be loved on.

He has some signs of a flea allergy or some irritation on his sides and paws, but otherwise in good condition.

He is a big boy at 116 pounds, he’s got a lot of love to share! ❤️🐾

Lady has an announcement! 📣

It’s officially summer! We get lots of questions about VOLUNTEERING this time of year so here we go!

Q: How old do you have to be?
A: 16+ years old with your parent/guardian

Q: When are volunteer hours?
A: Volunteer hours are the same as adoption hours through the week: Tuesday-Friday 4-8pm and Saturday Noon-4pm*

*If there is an unexpected closure or change in hours, we post that information to our page as soon as possible (more of an issue in the winter time)

Q: What can I do there?
A: This varies for everyone! Most of our volunteers enjoy walking dogs and spending time with them. There are other ways to help, such as assisting with intake photos, helping to organize supplies, dish washing, tidying, folding laundry, scooping 💩, etc. We host a few adoption events a year and would love you to help with that, too!

Q: Do I need to bring anything with me?
A: No, we have extra leashes for walking, toys for engagement. If you would like to bring your own leash that is perfectly fine, too.

Q: What do I wear?
A: Not your Easter Sunday clothes or your nicest, cleanest shoes. Wear comfy clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty from muddy paws, dog hair, and other messes. Close-toed shoes!! NO sandals.

Q: Do I have to stay the whole time?
A: No, some volunteers have about only 20 minutes to spend in the evening before getting home to cook dinner. That is the perfect amount of time to walk a dog. So stay as long as you like and head out when you must.

Q: When is a good day to start?
A: Any day is fine, but Saturdays are always a good day to learn the ropes! Some of our regulars can’t make it to the shelter until later in the weekday evenings and we want to meet you!

In addition to loving these animals and giving them attention, we are big on safety and the health of our animals. We have systems in place to know which dogs are new and shouldn’t be walked or around other dogs yet, and systems for the safety of all volunteers and staff - not all dogs coming and going may be safe for you to interact with. Listening to each other and communicating while at the shelter is very important.

We welcome you out any time and look forward to seeing you soon! ❤️🐾🤗

It’s Thursday, and Weasel is manning the desk duty tonight.

We don’t know what that means, but a milk bone tax will be involved for any visitors tonight, surely.

Come see us! We are here until 8pm! 🤗❤️🐾

Today, all of us at BCAS wish a very big congratulations to all Boyd County High School graduates! 🐾❤️🎓

We especially want to send our well wishes to Miko Lester. Since the summer of 2025, Miko has spent countless hours consistently visiting our shelter after school to help walk, socialize, take photos of pur dogs, and bring more friends along the way.

Congratulations, Miko on this huge milestone!!! It is one of many successes to come. Thank you for giving so much to these shelter kiddos. ❤️
