Asheville Humane Society is about hope, not heartache. As Buncombe County’s critical safety net since 1984, we are always here to save and protect every animal. We have mastered the art of saving lives within our walls and now we are going even further, helping our community’s pets and their people thrive together. We are going beyond a no-kill community to ensure that each animal has the quality of life they deserve – a life worth living.

Pam is a bit older, wiser – independent yet spirited. She takes her time meeting new people which can make her seem aloof. Her adopter wanted time to let her true, joyful personality come out and see if Pam would be a good match with kids.

That’s where the Test Drive comes in! Sponsored by Fred Anderson Subaru, the Test Drive is a seven-day trial run to see how they fit with a potential adopter.

If, like Pam, it is a success, we happily finalize the adoption. If not, now we know more about what kind of home the dog would love best!

Interested in going for a Test Drive? All available dogs older than 6 months are eligible. Visit our Adoption Center at 14 Forever Friend Lane to chat with an Adoption Counselor!

Sometimes a name says it all! Rhea was made for lounging in windowsills, snoozing in her favorite spot, then warming your lap (and heart) like a little sunbeam.

This 7-year-old lady confidently asks for affection when she wants it, and will let you know when she doesn’t. She’s a good fit for someone who “speaks” cat.

Rhea is on a special diet to help manage some renal issues but, thanks to Four Seasons Plumbing her adopter will get a full bag of food free! She also comes spay/neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped all at no cost to the adopter thanks to Four Season’s generosity.

Come meet this ray of sunshine at 14 Forever Friend Lane.

We are reimagining our intake process with the launch of our Pet Help Center, a resource designed to better serve the pets and people of Buncombe County by providing compassionate services to those in need.

The Pet Help Center helps people navigate issues involving pets in Buncombe County, including lost and found pets, rehoming support, pet retention resources, owner surrender requests, end-of-life services, and basic shelter services.

Check out our website ashevillehumane.org/get-help/ for more resources and guidance if you find an animal needing help or call 828-250-6430 if you are in need.

“Sometimes it only takes a small amount of support to prevent a pet from entering the shelter unnecessarily,” said Adam Cotton, director of Community Solutions at AHS. “This is the quiet power of our work. We meet people in their hardest moments, and if we do it right, those moments don’t just resolve. They ripple outward, build trust and change communities for the better.”

‼️URGENT FOSTERS NEEDED for Parvo Puppies🏠

Two days ago we took in a stray mom dog and her litter of 6-week-old puppies. Unfortunately, after intake, they tested positive for parvo.

Parvovirus is highly contagious and causes severe gastrointestinal illness. It can be life-threatening if left untreated. Luckily, we caught it early and started antibody treatment already!

‼️🏠 To help protect the rest of the animals in our care and give these puppies the best chance to recover, we urgently need foster homes. If you have an indoor space separate from other animals that can be easily disinfected (no carpet or porous surfaces) and are willing to help, reach out to our foster team at [email protected]!

Parvovirus can sound scary, and fostering these puppies won't be the right fit for every home. However, these puppies NEED special care. We're optimistic about their prognosis, and we'll make sure you have the supplies, training, and daily communication to support you every step of the way!

Go big or go home? Nah, go big AND go home!

You can take one of our BIG dogs home for free! Any dog 6 months or older will be available adoption fees waived until June 14.

We have a lot of dogs right now and these big-hearted goofballs need more space than we currently have.

So if you like big mutts (and you cannot lie) visit us! We are open 7 days a week!

And here’s a big bonus: Mitchell County Animal Rescue, Inc-North Carolina will be bringing a few cuties here too on Saturday, May 30!

🙅‍♂️Cartoons have lied to generations of people that cats should drink little saucers of cow’s milk (think Tom and Jerry, Aristocats…)

Kitten GI systems are incredibly sensitive. Feeding them the wrong thing is one of the fastest ways to end up with diarrhea, dehydration, upset stomachs, and a very sick kitten.

🚫Here are a few things NOT to feed nursing kittens:

- Cow’s milk
- Almond milk, oat milk, goat milk, or other milk alternatives
- Human baby formula
- Adult cat food
- Catsip or “Cat Milk” (this is a treat intended for adult cats)
- Unverified homemade concoctions

Kittens that are 0-4 weeks old need need kitten-specific milk replacer, such as KMR, Shelter’s Choice, or Breeder’s Edge.
