Asheville Humane Society is about hope, not heartache. As Buncombe County’s critical safety net since 1984, we are always here to save and protect every animal. We have mastered the art of saving lives within our walls and now we are going even further, helping our community’s pets and their people thrive together. We are going beyond a no-kill community to ensure that each animal has the quality of life they deserve – a life worth living.

Let’s get real—shelter life can be tough.

Even in the most loving environment, it can be overwhelming for dogs who’ve already been through so much. Our team works tirelessly to provide comfort, stability, and affection, and with time, most dogs begin to blossom. We see tails wag, personalities shine, and trust start to build.

But for some of our long-term residents, like Frank, the stress can begin to take a toll.

Frank came to us as a stray, timid and fearful. With time and attention, he began to open up—trotting around the yard, nudging for affection, learning that humans can be kind. But lately, we’ve seen a shift. He’s withdrawn again, clearly needing the comfort of a stable, loving home.

Frank thrives in a calm, quiet environment where he can be your one and only. He’s not a fan of sharing his people with other pups, and he’s looking for someone who can offer him peace, patience, and plenty of cuddles.

Could you be that person?

Join us September 5–7 at our Fall for Love adoption event, hosted at our Adoption Center (14 Forever Friend Lane). Meet Frank—or one of our many amazing animals—and see what love looks like when it’s given the time and space to grow.

🍟You know what they say about French fries… you can’t have just one! Usually the same is true for kittens, but long-time foster Alison Moon had been able to resist the temptation. She fostered 33 kittens for Asheville Humane Society without a “foster fail” – until French Fry.

French Fry arrived in rough shape: underweight, with a corneal ulcer, and persistent tummy troubles. As Alison cared for French Fry, the kitten's affectionate nature and fierce determination melted her heart. Sometimes, love means breaking a perfect streak.

Fosters like Alison are critical to our life-saving work— giving animals a soft place to land while they heal, grow, and get ready for forever homes. Right now, we need more fosters, especially for kittens who need some extra TLC like French Fry!

Asheville Humane Society provides everything you need: food, supplies, and medical care — all free. You provide your love and time, we provide the rest.

Alison said she loves fostering kittens because it's flexible, you experience the joys of kitten love without commitment (until she met French Fry, of course!)

"I love nurturing the little different personalities and in a small way helping a worthy cause," she said.

🤒Some of our dogs could really use a sick day and we need your help!

We have quite a few pups with URI (upper respiratory infection) - basically the dog version of a common cold. While it’s not super serious, it spreads quickly in the shelter, and it’s tough for dogs to truly rest and recover here. Most start feeling better in about 10 days with antibiotics (usually hidden in food once a day!) and some extra TLC, so we’re looking for fosters who can help them recover with about a two-week stay.

That’s where you come in! In a foster home, dogs get a cozy bed, a calm space to relax, and the one-on-one love they need to bounce back faster. We’ll provide medications, supplies, and support every step of the way! Canine URI is contagious to other dogs, but not to cats, other pets, or people.

If you’re up for some canine cuddles to help a pup through their recovery, apply to foster today or email us at [email protected].

Not ready for a sick pup? We have lots of other animals looking for foster homes too! Sign up at ashevillehumane.org/get-involved/foster.

She may look like Grumpy, but she's really Snow White.

Meet Scarlett—a 5-year-old princess with a gentle soul with tons of charm. She’s the homebody type who prefers naps to parties, snuggles over play, and thinks every day should include cozy blankets, head scratches and several batches of biscuits. She’ll happily warm your lap, supervise your reading time, or help you wind down after a long day.

Scarlett does have a few medical quirks that require special care:

She has mild but ongoing eye discharge that needs gentle cleaning every day or two. It isn't linked to any eye or vision issues, but regular monitoring with your vet is important.

She also has allergies that led to hair loss in the past, but she’s thriving on her special Royal Canin RC or Ultamino diet, and would need to stick to it.

Despite these needs, Scarlett is an incredibly resilient and affectionate cat. All she desires is a quiet, low-stress home with someone willing to provide the care she deserves.

Sound like a match? Come meet Scarlett at 14 Forever Friend Lane!

Thank you to Four Seasons Plumbing! It is with their generous support that Scarlett is spayed microchipped, vaccinated, and comes with a starter bag of food, all at no cost to her adopter.

Leela is a fun-loving, loyal 1.5-year-old who’s ready to be someone’s whole world. She’s sweet, crate trained, leash trained, and knows basic commands like sit and lay down. Leela lives to play ball—seriously, it’s her favorite thing—and she’ll keep you laughing with her playful, slightly toy-obsessed personality. She prefers not to share her toys, so she’d likely thrive as the only pet in the home where she can soak up all the attention. Leela’s got a big heart and tons of love to give—she just needs someone to give her a chance.

Right now, all of our adult animals have their adoption fees waived AND if you adopt Leela, you'll get a $50 Ingles gift card courtesy of 98.1 The River, 105.9 The Mountain and Mix 96.5 Keep your eye on their socials to see her radio feature!

We’re at capacity! We need your help again, urgently.

Back in July we asked our community to step up when we were pressed for space, and you did! We went from critical space concerns to manageable. But when you work in animal welfare, there's always work to be done. Due to a few unexpected situations that brought large amounts of animals into our care, we need your help again--more than ever.

In just one week, we took in 140 cats and dogs. At this same time last year we took in only 68. We seriously need space, and you can help!

You can not only make a huge difference for an animal in need by providing a new home, but every adoption opens up space in our Adoption Center for another animal who needs it desperately.

Right now our adult animals need you the most, so we've waived their adoption fees through the end of August. View all available animals on our website (link in bio), or stop by in person at 14 Forever Friend Lane—we’re open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

If you’re not in a position to adopt or foster, you can still make a difference! Share this post or tag someone you know who's looking to adopt!

In this economy, 10 bucks doesn’t get you that far, unless you’re at Asheville Humane Society! Until August 15, for just $10, you can adopt an animal that has all their vaccinations, is microchipped, spay/neutered, and comes with a bag of food to get you started.

Think about it… would you rather use that 10 bucks for 2 medium iced lattes, or a new best friend?

This isn’t just a discount. It’s a chance to do something amazing for a pet who’s been dreaming of a new home. And for just $10, you get a lifetime of love and gratitude.

This handsome boy has found his match!

Hedwig came to us a little unsure of the world. He was friendly and energetic, but nervous. He needed a little patience, a lot of love, and someone willing to help him learn. And now, thanks to our Test Drive program (sponsored by Fred Anderson Subaru), he’s been adopted by someone who can provide exactly what he needs!

The Test Drive program is a seven-day trial run to see how they fit with a potential adopter. If its a success (like it was for Hedwig) we celebrate happy match. If not, now we know more about what kind of home the dog would love best!

Interested in going for a Test Drive? All available dogs older than 6 months are eligible. Visit our Adoption Center at 14 Forever Friend Lane to chat with an Adoption Counselor!
