“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times…” This is the most fitting description of 2020. When midnight struck on December 31, 2019, I like everyone else had NO idea of what was in store. Disease. Isolation. Frustration. Injustice. Outrage. The worst of times… AND Self-sacrifice (putting self in harm’s way repeatedly and consistently for the sake of others), Creative love (dropping off meals, shopping for neighbors, standing outside the window of nursing homes with Happy Birthday signs) Generosity (buying gift cards to restaurants and hair salons not knowing if you would ever get to use them, mailing checks to pet sitters 😊) Kindness and Goodness (people of all hues seeking justice for others, friends and neighbors having difficult and deep conversations, people wanting to be better) The best of times…

May we all seek to be better than we are. May we all seek to love our neighbor truly and deeply.

1 Corinthians 13 1
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

This little princess only likes to walk short distances but loves to be outside. I found the perfect solution. I dusted off my doggy stroller and off we go. Now we can go for 2.5 mile walks.

Hi, All. Many of you are accustomed to contacting me on my cell phone. I dropped it recently and it went down hill from there. It rings but I cannot receive calls nor texts. I also understand that the voicemail is full. A new phone is on the way but has been delayed due to the current pandemic. I ask your patience at this time. Please call on the office number and give that number to your referrals as well. I appreciate your understanding. Stay safe and healthy!

While many are working from home and others are binge watching on Netflix (smile), our health care workers are working long hours under incredible pressure. A suggestion was made to another company that it would be nice for those who are working from home and not presently in need of pet care to sponsor pet care for health care workers and others on the front line of this pandemic. Around Midnight would be thrilled to participate in such an arrangement. If you know a health care worker in need of assistance, have him or her call me. If you want to sponsor a health care worker, call me. Email is good too. Stay healthy. Stay safe. If you can, stay home.

We will get through this...

I have been asked what is Around Midnight Pet Services doing to keep our clients safe. While we are taking extra precautions, dog walking to some degree inherently embodies social distancing and hand washing. Until recently, we rarely crossed paths with our pet parents and we wash our hands after each walk. The team and I are being mindful of our health. Team members are letting me know if they are experiencing any cold or flu symptoms. If they are, their walks are reassigned. As we all attempt to stay safe and healthy, we will keep our distance now that more of you are home. We ask that you do the same. Additionally, if you are experiencing a fever or flu like symptoms please let us know. Together, we can work to keep each other safe.
Many of you know if you need anything, we are only a phone call away. Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can be of assistance. I am happy to run errands for you and drop off items if needed. Just call!

My last post was July 8 more than two months ago. I was closing the office and heading to Iceland. I have been working ever since my return. Nearly everyone I told I was going to Iceland replied "that's on my bucket list." Well, it should definitely be on the list. It was a wonderful experience. I have finally finished writing my reviews and uploading photos from the trip. If you are planning a trip or just want to see the pictures, I invite you to look at:

This is not the picture I chose to represent Iceland. Facebook chose it. :-) Enjoy!

"Hey, have you heard? We have space for few more." Around Midnight Pet Services has openings for a select few midday walks Monday through Friday. We have been at capacity for nearly a year and had to turn potential new furry friends away. Sadly, some of our furry friends have moved away, but now we have space for more.

Chippers

Today is the South Riding Community Sale. My friend Barbara will have a tent on Edgewater Street. Barbara's dog Chipper developed health issues that were exacerbated by certain ingredients in dog treats and food. Barbara's journey to find the "right" treat led her to develop her own!!! The treats are single ingredient and locally sourced. If you are out and about, stop by her tent. If your pup would like to try her treats, private message me. Look for Chippers Treat tent.

Being Your Own Boss
Often I hear people say, “I would love to be my own boss.” If he or she is actually talking to me, I just smile. I love being “my own boss.” With that comes being my own receptionist, my own secretary, my own marketing guru, my own IT person and the list goes on and on. Being one’s own boss requires one to wear many hats. Through the years, I have been fortunate to have others fill these roles at different times, but at the end of the day the buck stops with me.

In my last position (before Around Midnight), I collaborated with other non-profits that advocated for children. As my time was winding down, the Executive Director of one of those non-profits said “You can’t leave. This is your passion. You were born to do this.” I have often thought about what she said. I realized that my passion is caring. I was born to care. I have cared about people and animals my entire life—whether it is was feeding the homeless in downtown San Francisco with my sister or feeding stray cats in our backyard with my dad. Life has come full circle for me with the creation of The Care Concierge. Now, I get to spend my days with pets and people. Life is good!

It recently occurred to me that for the majority of my adult working life I have had the privilege and fortune to work in positions that fulfilled some interest of mine or for which I had great passion. Not everyone is that fortunate. Rarely have I ever worked in a position where I dreaded Mondays or just had to pay the bills. I know not everyone has the option to do something they love, but I do want to encourage everyone to at least work in a place that you like. Too many hours are spent at work and away from loved ones to be in an unhappy or toxic environment. I remember working as a temp in an office with people who were miserable. Being young an optimistic, I encouraged a lady who thought she was “too old” to find another job to at least look. She called me weeks after my assignment had ended to tell me she had found a new job and had a wonderful boss. One of my professors once said do everything out of love. He said, “don’t leave a job because you hate it…leave because you love yourself too much to stay.” I followed that advice and it has been an awesome journey.

Adopt Foster Or Rescue needed

My family, who I have grown up with, is being deployed overseas for a long term too long for temporary fostering. I have been their one and only since I was 6 months old. I am now 75 lbs, 6 yrs old, spayed and up to date on vaccines. I would love a family to hang out with. I love people. I am okay with other dogs never been around cats.
If you can give me a home please send a message to @pawsforseniors or email [email protected].

Thanks for the shares

Parents worry. It is what they do. Mine are no different. So, I did not tell them about my plans to resign from my job and start my own company until AFTER I did so. Allow me to define after. I called them after leaving the farewell party my office threw for me…on my last day of work. My dad answered the phone. I told him of my plans. He calmly asked, “when are you going to do this?” I do not remember my exact response, but it was something along the lines of “I start working for myself on Monday.” I remember he just laughed. It was not a mocking or condescending laugh at all. It was more of a “that’s my firstborn” laugh. I felt such comfort hearing it. Although I did not consult my parents about my plans nor did I ask if it would be okay for me to move home if things did not work out, I NEVER doubted that I could. On a side note, not long afterwards my dad started his own private investigation firm.

Just another day in paradise...15 years later:

Today is the 15th anniversary of Around Midnight Pet Services! I will share reflections over the course of the month. Today, I just want to say Thank You to all who made this day possible. First, to my parents. Knowing I could pack up and move home if I did not succeed, gave me the last shot of courage I needed to make the jump into the world of entrepreneurship. (Of course, I did not share my plans PRIOR to the jump. More on that later…) Second, to all of the clients for your continued trust, loyalty and referrals. Without you, there would be no company. Third, to my awesome team. Your genuine care, concern and commitment to our furry friends keeps our human clients sending their friends, family and neighbors to us. I want to give a special thanks to Margie B who has been with Around Midnight for 12 years!!! Last but not least, my cousin Sheree and my friend Anne. Both were there from the beginning doing whatever it took to help Around Midnight get off the ground—from passing out flyers to scooping litter boxes. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

Some things I recently learned while networking that may benefit some of my pet customers. If your pooch is not feeling well and needs medicine, two places can help. Suppose your pup needs a special mix of medications or a dosage that is not readily available, The Compounding Center in Leesburg can help. Let's say your pup doesn't like the taste of his or her medicine http://www.mydrspharmacy.com/ My Dr's Pharmacy of Herndon can help. They can put certain medicines in a treat form.

A big THANK YOU to Arbor Terrace of Herndon for having us at the Live Well Expo. It was a great day! The weather cooperated and we had paper weights for the wind. We are all smiles here at Around Midnight Pet Services about our upcoming 15th anniversary. However, I am struggling with gift ideas to commemorate this milestone. A nice pen marked the 10th anniversary. All input for the 15th is welcome. A stemless wine glass? A regular wine glass? A t-shirt? Chocolate? I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
