"Hey, have you heard? We have space for few more." Around Midnight Pet Services has openings for a select few midday walks Monday through Friday. We have been at capacity for nearly a year and had to turn potential new furry friends away. Sadly, some of our furry friends have moved away, but now we have space for more.

Chippers

Today is the South Riding Community Sale. My friend Barbara will have a tent on Edgewater Street. Barbara's dog Chipper developed health issues that were exacerbated by certain ingredients in dog treats and food. Barbara's journey to find the "right" treat led her to develop her own!!! The treats are single ingredient and locally sourced. If you are out and about, stop by her tent. If your pup would like to try her treats, private message me. Look for Chippers Treat tent.

Being Your Own Boss
Often I hear people say, “I would love to be my own boss.” If he or she is actually talking to me, I just smile. I love being “my own boss.” With that comes being my own receptionist, my own secretary, my own marketing guru, my own IT person and the list goes on and on. Being one’s own boss requires one to wear many hats. Through the years, I have been fortunate to have others fill these roles at different times, but at the end of the day the buck stops with me.

In my last position (before Around Midnight), I collaborated with other non-profits that advocated for children. As my time was winding down, the Executive Director of one of those non-profits said “You can’t leave. This is your passion. You were born to do this.” I have often thought about what she said. I realized that my passion is caring. I was born to care. I have cared about people and animals my entire life—whether it is was feeding the homeless in downtown San Francisco with my sister or feeding stray cats in our backyard with my dad. Life has come full circle for me with the creation of The Care Concierge. Now, I get to spend my days with pets and people. Life is good!

It recently occurred to me that for the majority of my adult working life I have had the privilege and fortune to work in positions that fulfilled some interest of mine or for which I had great passion. Not everyone is that fortunate. Rarely have I ever worked in a position where I dreaded Mondays or just had to pay the bills. I know not everyone has the option to do something they love, but I do want to encourage everyone to at least work in a place that you like. Too many hours are spent at work and away from loved ones to be in an unhappy or toxic environment. I remember working as a temp in an office with people who were miserable. Being young an optimistic, I encouraged a lady who thought she was “too old” to find another job to at least look. She called me weeks after my assignment had ended to tell me she had found a new job and had a wonderful boss. One of my professors once said do everything out of love. He said, “don’t leave a job because you hate it…leave because you love yourself too much to stay.” I followed that advice and it has been an awesome journey.

Adopt Foster Or Rescue needed

My family, who I have grown up with, is being deployed overseas for a long term too long for temporary fostering. I have been their one and only since I was 6 months old. I am now 75 lbs, 6 yrs old, spayed and up to date on vaccines. I would love a family to hang out with. I love people. I am okay with other dogs never been around cats.
If you can give me a home please send a message to @pawsforseniors or email [email protected].

Thanks for the shares

Parents worry. It is what they do. Mine are no different. So, I did not tell them about my plans to resign from my job and start my own company until AFTER I did so. Allow me to define after. I called them after leaving the farewell party my office threw for me…on my last day of work. My dad answered the phone. I told him of my plans. He calmly asked, “when are you going to do this?” I do not remember my exact response, but it was something along the lines of “I start working for myself on Monday.” I remember he just laughed. It was not a mocking or condescending laugh at all. It was more of a “that’s my firstborn” laugh. I felt such comfort hearing it. Although I did not consult my parents about my plans nor did I ask if it would be okay for me to move home if things did not work out, I NEVER doubted that I could. On a side note, not long afterwards my dad started his own private investigation firm.

Just another day in paradise...15 years later:

Today is the 15th anniversary of Around Midnight Pet Services! I will share reflections over the course of the month. Today, I just want to say Thank You to all who made this day possible. First, to my parents. Knowing I could pack up and move home if I did not succeed, gave me the last shot of courage I needed to make the jump into the world of entrepreneurship. (Of course, I did not share my plans PRIOR to the jump. More on that later…) Second, to all of the clients for your continued trust, loyalty and referrals. Without you, there would be no company. Third, to my awesome team. Your genuine care, concern and commitment to our furry friends keeps our human clients sending their friends, family and neighbors to us. I want to give a special thanks to Margie B who has been with Around Midnight for 12 years!!! Last but not least, my cousin Sheree and my friend Anne. Both were there from the beginning doing whatever it took to help Around Midnight get off the ground—from passing out flyers to scooping litter boxes. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

Some things I recently learned while networking that may benefit some of my pet customers. If your pooch is not feeling well and needs medicine, two places can help. Suppose your pup needs a special mix of medications or a dosage that is not readily available, The Compounding Center in Leesburg can help. Let's say your pup doesn't like the taste of his or her medicine http://www.mydrspharmacy.com/ My Dr's Pharmacy of Herndon can help. They can put certain medicines in a treat form.

A big THANK YOU to Arbor Terrace of Herndon for having us at the Live Well Expo. It was a great day! The weather cooperated and we had paper weights for the wind. We enjoyed talking to people about Around Midnight and The Care Concierge. Attendees really seemed to enjoy the items we gave away for both companies.

We are all smiles here at Around Midnight Pet Services about our upcoming 15th anniversary. However, I am struggling with gift ideas to commemorate this milestone. A nice pen marked the 10th anniversary. All input for the 15th is welcome. A stemless wine glass? A regular wine glass? A t-shirt? Chocolate? I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Arbor Terrace of Herndon. It is a pet-friendly Independent Living residence. They have recently remodeled and it is beautiful! Many thanks to Stefa’nie Ross for the tour. They have a mimosa brunch on Sundays and an actual poker room! Around Midnight will have a table at their upcoming resource fair in April. Come out to see me and learn more about Arbor Terrace. If you or someone you know is looking to downsize with his or her furry friend, you should consider this place. And….Around Midnight will still care for your pup. 😊 If you cannot wait until April, Arbor Terrace is having a Grand Reopening on March 21st. Hope to see you in April!

What lovely place with a great philosophy! If you know someone who is looking for an assisted living residence, I highly recommend you consider Tribute at One Loudoun. And...your small furry friends can move-in with you.

We believe that if a community’s focus is strictly on care, they don’t care enough. At TOL, great care is just a by-product of bigger & better things.

Last week, I had the pleasure of seeing Sir Elton John perform. During his 2 ½ hour performance, I kept thinking “He’s having a blast!” It was so obvious that he and his band were loving every minute of their performance. I could not understand why this is his farewell tour. Then, he shared that he wants to spend more time with his children. Enough said. I was in California to celebrate my nephew’s fourth birthday and meet my newborn niece. I completely understood. There is something about those precious little souls that just captivates you. It was hard to leave them, but like Elton John I am having a blast! This May will be 15 years in business. I’m still having fun.

We are continuing to experience phenomenal growth thanks to all of your word-of-mouth referrals. We have pretty much pulled all advertising. With that said, we need to add members to our care team. A Labor Day relfection...

A few months ago, I awakened close to 6am to ensure that two dogs who take a number of medications received those medications and were let out to relieve themselves. This allowed their mom to attend the wedding of a dear friend. The friend really wanted my customer to attend but the dogs’ health concerns were prohibitive. After caring for the pups, I proceeded to McDonald’s where I purchased two fresh hot cups of coffee and two delicious breakfast sandwiches for my friend and me. I, then, surprised my friend with breakfast. We had a wonderful chat about all of life’s happenings.

People who never met and some who met only in passing were all affected by the actions of others--as is often the case in life. Because I got up on time and provided needed medication to two dogs, my customer was able to make her friend happy by attending the wedding. Because the team at McDonald’s did their job with care and precision, I was able to surprise my friend and we enjoyed a lovely visit. Had I not done what I did, the client would have been at the wedding stressed and/or planning an unexpected return home. Her friend would have been very disappointed. Had the person making the coffee or the team assembling the breakfast sandwiches at McDonald’s not done their job with care and accuracy, my friend and I would probably have been talking about the substandard breakfast and not have enjoyed our time together as much as we did.

All jobs are important regardless of how big or how small. All jobs are “real.” Whatever you do, from walking dogs to flipping burgers to running a Fortune 500 company, remember to do it with passion. Do it with care. Do it right. It matters! Happy Labor Day

Over the course of the last 14 years, my team and I have been asked to provide care to other members of your family—the ones who do not have fur.:-) We are touched by your trust and when possible, we were happy to assist. The requests have included: walking with an adult child who had special needs; visiting and having tea with a senior parent who would benefit from companionship; providing transportation to a medical important; and, of course picking up a child from school. 😊 As these requests have continued to come, I made the decision to create a company that would formally address these requests—The Care Concierge LLC. www.thecareconciergellc.com We look forward to continuing to care for your pets and now the other members of your family

I recently had the pleasure of visiting my nephew for his 3rd birthday in Los Angeles. We love our dogs here in Virginia, but I think Los Angeles may have us beat. Dogs were everywhere! Outside the coffee shop and walking with their pet parents was to be expected, but the grocery store? I had to take this picture.
