This weekend, two different relatives mentioned that they were thinking about getting a dog for their families.
As someone who absolutely loves dogs, my first reaction was, "That's exciting!" As a pet professional, my second response was “have you thought about the cost?” I never want to discourage anyone from adding a pet to their family. I DO want to encourage everyone to think beyond the adoption fee or initial purchase price and consider the true cost of dog ownership.
The reality is dogs are expensive. Responsible pet care extends far beyond food and annual vaccines. Pet sitters, dental care, preventive medications, training, boarding, emergency vet visits, grooming, and daily enrichment all play a role in keeping dogs healthy and happy.
The goal of this graphic isn't to discourage dog ownership—it's to encourage thoughtful planning.
Dogs bring incredible joy, companionship, and unconditional love. They need and deserve families who are prepared not only for the fun parts, but also for the financial commitment that comes with providing great care throughout their lives.
When families understand the commitment upfront, pets receive better care and are more likely to stay in loving homes for life.
I invite current pet parents to share what expense surprised you most after becoming a pet parent?
