All three of our Derby horses showed incredible footwork the last few days, but what impressed us most was how locked in they were on their cows.

A great cow horse doesn’t just move fast—it reads the cow, anticipates every move, and stays connected through every turn and stop. This clip is a perfect example of the athleticism, focus, and cow sense these horses are bringing to the arena.

The Colorado Reined Cow Horse Association just wrapped up the Derby and Hackamore Events at the Drought Buster Show, and for the first time in my life… I was completely speechless.

The reining went very well.
The herd work went great.
But I missed watching the fence work live.

When I saw the composite score, I honestly thought something had to be wrong because no matter how I added it up… it came out to a 78.

A 78?!?!

That can’t be right… that’s the highest score we’ve ever received at any show or event!

I first checked with Brianna, Matt Koch’s wife, to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind. She confirmed it… but she hadn’t been able to watch it either! So then I called the event coordinator, and they confirmed it again and sent us the video.

Still in shock. Truly.

It took me a little while to make this post because I honestly needed a minute to process it all.

Thank you to Matt and Brianna Koch for the years of dedication, training, belief, and investment you’ve poured into our program. You treat these horses and this journey like it’s your own, and that means more than words can say.

Shine Yer Sugar has now officially won $76,987.96
