⚠️ Trail Tip with Luke Brown - Be Careful of T-Posts

One of the most dangerous obstacles you may encounter on the trail isn't a wild animal, steep terrain, or rushing water...

It's a T-post.

I've known of numerous horses that have been seriously injured after running into or becoming impaled on a T-post. Even when they survive, recovery can be long and difficult, leaving both physical and emotional scars.

When you're riding, keep an eye out for T-posts that are out of place or standing alone away from a fence line. In a moment of panic, a horse can spook, buck, rear, or bolt without noticing the danger in front of them.

Most horses don't pay much attention to a T-post—until it's too late.

A little awareness can go a long way toward preventing a devastating accident. If possible, remove exposed T-posts or install protective caps designed specifically for them to help keep horses and riders safer. 🐴

⏱️ The Horsemanship Minute - The Power of the Rest Period

When you're first teaching your horse a new exercise, one of the most important things you can do is give them time to think when they get it right.

If your horse doesn't understand what you're asking, stay consistent and keep working until they make the correct choice. The moment they do, release the pressure and allow them to rest.

That rest period is where a lot of the learning happens. 🐴

As your horse gains understanding and confidence, the rest period can become shorter. The release of pressure should always be there, but the time between repetitions can decrease as your horse becomes more proficient.

Remember: reward the try, then give your horse a chance to process what they've learned.

🌲 Trail Tip 39 - Work on Weaknesses as They Present Themselves

This is Part 2 of working on your horse's weaknesses as they show up on the trail.

If possible, take the time to address fear and spooking when it happens. If necessary, get off and help your horse from the ground first—just one more reason why solid groundwork is so important.

Once your horse becomes more comfortable with the object, animal, or area that caused concern, getting back on becomes a much safer and more productive experience.

I focus heavily on trail safety and helping horses become safe, confident partners for their owners. When you make safety a priority and consistently work through challenges as they arise, your horse will become more reliable, more confident, and much more enjoyable to ride.

The days of feeling nervous or anxious before a trail ride can become a thing of the past when you apply these simple but powerful principles.
