Halloween Pet Safety Tips!

Halloween can be lots of fun for the whole family, but some of our favorite spooky traditions can be scary—or even dangerous—for our pets.

Keep candy away from pets — Chocolate, xylitol, and other candy ingredients can be harmful to dogs and cats.

Decorate with care — Keep candles, wires, and small decorations out of paws’ reach.

Give them a quiet space — Frequent doorbells, costumes, and unfamiliar visitors can be stressful. A calm room with their favorite bed or toys can help.

Skip the scary costume — If your pet doesn’t enjoy dressing up, don’t force it. If they do wear a costume, make sure it fits comfortably and doesn’t restrict breathing, movement, hearing, or vision.

Watch the door — With trick-or-treaters coming and going, pets can easily become frightened and slip outside. Keep them safely indoors and make sure their ID tags and microchip information are current.

Watch those treats! — If your pet gets into Halloween candy or something potentially toxic, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison resource right away.

As temperatures start to drop, our furry friends need a little extra care, too! Here are a few simple ways to help keep your pets safe and comfortable this season:

Keep them warm — Short-haired, senior, and small pets may need an extra layer when heading outside.

Protect their paws — Cold, wet, or icy surfaces can irritate paw pads. Wipe and check their paws after outdoor adventures.

Provide a cozy space — Make sure your pet has a warm, dry place to rest away from drafts.

Check before you start your car — Outdoor cats and other animals may seek warmth underneath or around vehicles.

Don’t forget hydration — Pets still need access to fresh, clean water during cooler months.
