Bluex went back home to his family today after completing the first phase of his Board & Train, the Foundations 🙌 He learned down, stay, come, sit, heel and place. Being young and the stubborn boy he is, we’re keeping it as motivating as possible while he matures. His fam is already working with him and their other dog at home (I see you!!) to keep up his practice on the things he learned so he keeps all his knowledge through the transition and continues to build. He’ll come back in a few months for the second half of his program so we can add more accountability to tighten everything up and make his obedience solid and reliable. Cannot WAIT to get the baby hippo back, such a joy!

Do you prefer a pup with up ears or down? Zeke is happy to offer you both! All of us here at CHS love Zeke, a two-year-old, 80-lb galoot. But we have to be honest: Zeke doesn't come across all that great at first when people come to visit: his young boy energy takes over and he can turn people off with his enthusiasm. BUT WAIT!!! Give him a few minutes to burn off all that excitement and he's a really special pup. Our friend Jennifer Mornard, the amazing dog trainer from Level Dog Training Company in Angels Camp, came to meet him and discovered that he's smart and willing to learn. Jen is so sure you'll love him that she's offering a free in-person consultation with his new adopter to get him off to a great start. How's that for a vote of confidence?!

Discover all this handsome brindle boy has to offer. We're here from 11-5 Wed thru Sat.

Phaedra has grown so much this week! She’s here for a 3 week stay, and she started from a good foundation of basic obedience. I’ve been working with her Mom on and off since she was an itty bitty pup and she’s also done group training classes with the kennel club. She’s here to fill in some gaps, working on impulse control and better reliability in the behaviors she already understands.
One of the challenges I ran into right away was discovering that Phaedra was fairly nervous in new places and scenarios. Because of her uncertainty, she was very easily distracted and reluctant to take food or treats in public. However, she has come leaps and bounds this week with her confidence after lots of outings and encouragement, and I’ve been able to start diving into more training with her commands.
Now she’s giving me a lot more engagement, taking food more readily, and overall seems happier and more enthusiastic. She still gets spooked sometimes and I’m just beginning to truly work on her obedience, but I’m really looking forward to this next week to see what we can do!

Smokey was such a fun and rewarding dog to train! He came to me for resource guarding, some handler and human aggression, and to work on basic obedience and structure that could help keep a harmonious home.
He was an absolute superstar at obedience, learning quickly and demonstrating a love for the work! We worked a lot on stay and place as a tool to help manage some of the conflict arising in the house, and obedience outside and in public to build Smokey a sense of purpose and a partnership with mutual respect between him and his handler. We also practiced a lot of cooperative play, making play time a joint exercise rather than led solely by him.
I’m very happy to report he was able to completely overcome his resource guarding in my context, both in and out of the crate. We developed some solid communication. He learned some really impressive commands. And we found an understanding of how to interact that prevents issues and gives his owners more control.
Smokey was signed up for the Foundation Program. I’m incredibly proud of him and what he accomplished, and the owners will keep working on making progress from here!

We’re just a couple days past completing Stanley’s first two weeks of his Board & Train. Our main focus coming in was tackling some separation anxiety, confidence building, and socializing for this rescue puppy, while laying foundations of obedience the owner can build on when he goes home.
Happy to report his crate training and separation anxiety is totally overcome, and his confidence is peaking! So much confidence in fact that we’re moving on to reigning him in a little bit 😂 He’s also learning his obedience commands so fast that I’m thrilled to see how polished we can get him before he goes home. Such a privilege to work with this dog and his sweet owner! On to the next phase…. I’ve been posting his daily training clips on my stories if you want to follow along 🐾

Dolly! 🎶❤️👢 Some clips of working with Dolly on her neutrality towards other dogs and livestock. She’s come such a long way!! Allie, her owner, is doing so great with continuing her exposure, getting practice with her tools, and learning how to give the right amount of feedback before a reaction happens. Reactivity can be really challenging to overcome and doesn’t happen overnight, especially with a particularly Spicy dog like Dolly. But staying consistent with your feedback and working on exposure really pays off over time! One day you may look back and realize it’s been ages since a reaction, or that you are never hesitant to take your dog out anymore. We want that for both dog and owner! Working through the challenges helps everyone live their best life 🌲🥾🏝️🐕🥂
