We know this isn’t something we usually have to worry about here in Alaska but this Month is National Heartworm Awareness Month. The American Heartworm Society’s latest incidence map from 2022 shows that there were heartworm cases diagnosed in all of the lower 48 states as well as Hawaii. If your dogs have recently moved here from another state or your pet has traveled to any other state, then we recommend heartworm testing.

The Belgian Malinois is a beautiful breed but they have an extremely high drive and they are a working breed. Without structured outlets, this high drive will lead to frustration, anxiety, aggression, and destructive behaviors. Daily training and mental stimulation aren’t optional, they are essential. We recently had the pleasure of seeing a MARVELOUS Malinois and spoke to his owner about what they do. Let us know if you want some of the tips and tricks he relayed to us.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is toxic to dogs. It is found in many products, including those that are sugar free or those for dental care. It causes the pancreas to release 3-7times the normal amount of insulin, causing blood glucose to plummet. It can get so low that patients can experience seizures. Xylitol can also cause liver destruction. If your dog eats any products with Xylitol, please contact animal poison control and the emergency hospital right away.
