It has been a busy week. Wednesday morning there was a knock at the door and ...SURPRISE ...it was the state inspector.

This is when being a consistent, routine, neat freak pays off....i have the same routine and am always inspection ready.

I had finished my normal routine with the furbabies, had a bite to eat and was just going to jump in the shower. Was everything in good shape...yep....paperwork all good...yep. Dogs all in good condition ...yep. They had all had nail trims 8-21. Most of the furbabies had their regular grooming, bath and brush out on Sunday. ( mom's with new litters and very pregnant moms were not bathed. We don't like to cause stress to new moms and moms about ready to have pups. They did have nail trims though.) The only one not in good shape was me.....i really could have used a shower before the inspector arrived...lol

The inspector did have questions about R***r and Tinkerbell. For R***r it was concerns for his quality of life. I assured her that he is in no pain and when the day comes that we see pain and see he is not enjoying his life....we are prepared to make that difficult call to our vet. Tinkerbell, it was questions about her hair loss. She has CDA. I will make another post soon giving an update on her. Both R***r and Tinkerbell have been seen by our vets, numerous times. R***r just had a vet visit in July and Tinkerbell in April.

I could not have had a better inspection even if I had the slightest idea that she would knock at the door Wednesday morning ( except for me having a shower)

Each state has their own requirements. In Iowa you must be State licensed if you have 4 intact dogs ( male or female), have even 1 litter and advertise that litter. You need a Sales Tax Number and are required to collect, report and submit sales tax monthly. Each state licensed breeder is required to have an annual vet inspection to your home where the vet examines all your dogs and fills out a report. The state inspector asks for that report during the state inspection. The big problem.....a lot do not follow the law and get state licensed. The state relies on the public to report people having litters without licensing.

Monday Zoey had her five puppies. Keeping consistent, Zoey had her puppies 3 days past due date. Her last litter with Tucker she had 5 black & tans. 4 boys and 1 girl. That was the first time that I had to order some puppy non-toxic nail polish and paint their nails to tell them apart. I have a lot of whelping collars ...but I am not a fan. I always worry that a fluke accident will happen with the collars. I did have to use collars during Covid when I was not allowed in the vet office. They would come to the vehicle and take the litter inside. Having colored collars, if there was an issue with a pup...there would be no confusion which pup it was....since I wasn't present for the examinations. The pups only wore the collars for the vet visit. This litter, Zoey started early labor Monday morning. I had three furbabies having vet dental appointments that day, Tucker, Nemo and Dolly. I rushed home from dropping the 3 off and then patiently waited for progress. Tom ended up picking the 3 up after their dentals since I didn't want to leave Zoey's side. The first pup arrived at 5:47 pm and the last at 7:57pm. 4 boys and 1 girl. She is consistent.....lol. This time 2 back/tan dapples and 3 black/tans. They all took a drop in weight after birth, which is normal. The little girl has struggled a bit and she has been watched closely. She is slowly starting to gain after her weight loss. Zoey is a Silky-wire and Tucker is a Smooth coat. They can have smooth coat, longhair, regular-wire and Silky-wire pups. It will be a few weeks to tell coat type. All pups will also be Embark Genetically tested.
***just a reminder that we do not offer pups till we have back their Genetic testing.

Bennington would have been 5 years old today. He was lost way too young (1-13-26). He was a healthy 4 year old boy that was always kept up to date on shots. Saw the vet regularly. He went for his routine Distemper ( Parvo) shot and had an anaphylaxis reaction. His parents Carol and Phil loved this little boy so much. They are hard-core dachshund lovers. Their last 4 dachshunds have been from us ( Melsh Precious Pets) Our hearts are just broken over this loss.

Back on March 18th Carol posted this:

For all my pet owner friends, I have not posted an official cause of death regarding our Bennington, because of the pathology report from ISU does not “prove or disprove” the fact that all Vets who treated Benny agree he died from the parvo vaccine. Please be vigilant about speaking to your vets about pre-treatment or Titer testing especially for smaller dogs. This never should have happened, and there should absolutely be accountability with the manufacturers based on vets reporting, not solely on necropsies that were not done in an urgent matter when anaphylactic shock treatment protocols are followed.

We are still mourning the loss of our Bennington and all the Vets local and in DSM treated him with the correct protocol based on anaphylactic shock.

This vaccine took his life and yet we are required to continue to vaccinate our dachshunds by industry standards for boarding, grooming, etc. Rabies is mandated by state law. Our only option going forward is the Titer testing. More research needs to be done. 💔🐾
