Lesser-Known Toxins That Can Harm Your Dog
Many dog owners are aware that chocolate, grapes, and certain artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs, but some less commonly recognized hazards could be just as dangerous.
One particularly concerning toxin is xylitol, a sweetener found in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters, mints, and even certain medications. Even small amounts can cause a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar, leading to seizures and liver failure.
Another unexpected risk is blue cheese. As it ages, it can develop a substance called roquefortine C, which is highly toxic to dogs and may cause tremors, seizures, or severe digestive distress.
Prevention Tips:
✔️ Always read ingredient labels carefully, particularly on peanut butter, medications, and sugar-free products.
✔️ Keep all food products out of reach of pets, including cheese trays or snack bowls.
✔️ If ingestion is suspected, seek immediate veterinary attention or contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
