There’s something about being out in the woods when it’s still dark that makes you realize real quick how small you are, and how much you’re not in control of.

You hear every sound a little clearer. You feel every doubt a little heavier. But then you remember this verse.

Not everything out there is seen, and not everything that tries to shake you has power over you.

Same way I trust a good dog on a track I can’t see, I’ve learned to trust what I can’t always understand.

Authority’s already been given. Fear doesn’t get the final say.

Puppy Play Day

What else are you supposed to do after a big rain storm?
Turn ‘em loose and let ‘em have at it.

Nothing better than watching these pups cut loose, splash through the mud, and just be dogs. It may be messy, but this is where they learn, grow, and build that drive we like to see.

Clean kennels don’t make tough dogs… a little mud never hurt anything.

We’re getting ready to make a cross we’ve been looking forward to, but I ran into a little hiccup. Got a new phone and lost my list of folks who were wanting pups.

Keeping it simple and fun. Start with short, easy tracks to build confidence and let her figure it out. No pressure, just learning and enjoying the work.

She’s already showing natural ability and drive. Bella is doing great, and we’re excited to watch her progress as we start adding distance, age, and tougher tracks.

It all starts with the basics.

Day 1 of Intro to Blood Trailing.

This pup made a long haul all the way from Utah to South Louisiana, and today we got to work. New ground, new smells, thick humidity, and a whole different kind of track than what she’s used to but she stepped up like she belonged.

We kept it simple: short track, light blood, building confidence and letting instinct take over. Nose down, tail working, figuring it out one step at a time. That’s what it’s all about on day one.

It’s not about perfection it’s about lighting that fire and giving them a reason to keep going.

Long way to come, but this is just the start.

Who got y’all into hunting dogs?

Serious question. Who was the one that first put you around it… a dad, grandpa, uncle, buddy, or did you just fall into it on your own?

And what keeps you doing it today?

Is it the dogs themselves?
Is it the memories it brings back of people that ain’t here anymore?
Or is it just something deep down in you that loves hearing a dog work and watching one figure it out?

For a lot of us it started with somebody handing us a leash or letting us ride along… and somehow it turned into something we can’t stay away from.

Let’s hear it. Who started it for you and why do you still do it?

Today’s Spanky’s 6th birthday.

If you’ve ever seen him go, you already know what kind of dog he is. The true definition of no quit. The kind that’ll reach out there and get deep when the track calls for it, but still has the brains to work it out when things get tough.

Long range, head full of brains, and a heart full of grit. That’s the kind of Black Mouth Cur that keeps a man smiling when the woods get quiet and the track gets old.

Six years old and still going like he’s got something to prove every time he hits the ground.

Not many like him, and I’m proud to feed him every day.

Happy birthday old buddy. Let’s go find another one.
