Buttercup’s Journey to Healing 🩷
Sweet Buttercup came to us after several days of not eating and being very lethargic—definitely not her usual self. After a thorough physical exam, abdominal ultrasound, and bloodwork, we diagnosed her with hepatic lipidosis, also known as fatty liver disease.
This condition is more common in cats than dogs and often occurs when a cat stops eating for several days. The body begins to break down fat for energy, but the liver becomes overwhelmed, which can lead to liver failure.
Hepatic lipidosis is often secondary to another illness, but once it develops, it must be treated aggressively. The best medicine? Food! Since cats aren’t exactly fans of being forced to eat (iykyk), Buttercup had a feeding tube placed under anesthesia. This esophagostomy tube allows us to give her nutrition and medications directly, buying us time to treat the underlying cause of her illness.
With this lifesaving support, Buttercup is already showing signs of improvement. Her feeding tube can stay in place for weeks until she’s ready to eat on her own again.
We’re so proud of her progress and grateful to be part of her recovery. Keep Buttercup in your thoughts as she continues to heal!
