Heatwave where? We are horse girls!
So amazed by our KO Eventing LLC team and clients that showed up every day this last week to teach, care for the horses, and get in some ride time! We definitely have a tough group of ladies, thank you to everyone for showing up!

Ending the week with an XC schooling with Grace Park riding KO Eventing horse, Re*****on. Lesson taught by 8 month pregnant riding instructor, Kristen Obert Smith.

Keaton and Re*****on had a great time at the Windfall Farm Horse Shows June Summer Show last weekend. They earned all fourth place ribbons in a ground pole equitation and three cross rail equitation classes. Thank you Windfall for putting on a well ran show, Ohio for holding off on the rain, and congratulations to Keaton on their successful show!

Congratulations to Grace Park for a successful derby day horse show at Windfall Farm Horse Shows! Grace rode KO Eventing LLC horse, See What It Is “Re*****on,” to earn 2nd and 4th in the 18” future hunters and 3rd and 3rd in the 2 ft and 2’3 jumper classes in some decently sized classes! Re*****on is actually an off the track thoroughbred himself. He seems much happier with his new jumping, dancing, and teaching career than he did racing!

Can’t say enough great things about this sweet boy. For the last five years, he has been taking excellent care of his current teenage owner. This girl and Oliver have gone on all sorts of adventures, from riding double (even triple) with other barn kids, to trails, to competitions, to jumping 5 ft gates around the barn (crazy teens!). Don’t let his age fool you, this guy has plenty of miles left. Due to some non horse related medical issues of his owner, he’s had some low miles over the last couple years.
Oliver is the horse we are all looking for, safe enough to take care of littles one day then can turn around and be a serious competition horse the next.

Great news at KO Eventing! Show packets are out and copies are in the barn. If interested in showing, please request a packet from your instructor. The packet includes the definitions of different show times, the names, dates, and types of shows in our area, as well as estimated cost for each show.

Also, we are changing up our home show this year! Instead of offering an end of summer show, we are offering a summer long show series! Feel free to ask your instructor for more information and a sign up sheet.

Awards for the summer show series will be presented at the Summer Sendoff Barn Party on October 25, 2025. All KO Eventing Students are welcome and encouraged to the party, regardless if they did the summer show series or not!

🐎 🌳 🌞

When I post about riding outside the arena, I always get comments about the lack of open land for riding. I think this is an excuse. I taught at a Hunter Jumper barn after a divorce that left me without a farm. At that barn I took my students out of the arena to find natural and other obstacles.

We went out and stepped over the ditch beside the driveway. We went around back behind the barn and rode through a pile of sand. We rode in and out of the parked trailers. We explored and rode all over that small farm and the riding outside the arena built confidence in the riders and the horses.

The box jump below was at my old farm. We called it the "pig pen". It is made from ten small tree trunks that I stacked without the logs being attached so they would fall down if struck. It was a rectangle about 12 x 16 feet or 3 1/2 x 5 meters that took up a very small area on my farm's cross country course. What farm does not have the room for something like this?

The diagram shows the various lines we rode through and over the pig pen. In group lessons we used it like a game where people tried to one up each other with new challenging lines through it. Riders would begin by walking the various lines, then trotting and eventually cantering. At a canter there are some interesting bounces and some corner oxers (orange line).

We need to stop making excuses for keeping riders in the ring. When we limit riders to fenced arenas with flat groomed footing, we give them only a fragment of real riding that is not very useful when they want to progress to other aspects of riding.
