Hey community! We have a very special pup who needs help!

This is Mumbles, an incredibly friendly and well-behaved girl who lost her front right limb and is struggling orthopedically with her remaining limb and other joints. Mumbles lives with her momma, Susan, in an assisted living center in Rio Rancho. Mumbles means the world to Susan and has such a positive impact upon Susan’s life and in the lives of everyone in the center who meets her (she loves every single soul she meets). So we are doing our best to help support Susan in providing the unique care that Mumble’s needs. However, Mumbles is struggling a great deal with her remaining front limb and ability to be mobile and pain-free, and as a special-needs dog it can be very difficult for Susan to help Mumbles due to some significant limitations and challenges.

One of our goals at Eden Pet Care is to come alongside pet parents in need to help them care for their pets and *keep their pet in the home*, and not in a shelter. And in special circumstances like these, sometimes it takes a village of amazing people. So a very special friend of Susan and Mumbles put together a fundraiser to raise money for a wheelchair, physical therapy, and continued caregiving support to help Mumbles live a comfortable life with her mom.

Here is the GoFundMe put together for Susan, and below is a link to the KRQE news story from the recent fundraiser. A lot of amazing people came to support, but we are still far below our goal.

Thank you so much ahead of time for any support you may be able to provide!

Chirrups and Chatter is one of my favorite educational pages to follow, as it’s full of wonderful info on how to properly interact with these creatures that live in our homes, speak a difference language, and, yep, often don’t want the affection that often gets forced upon them. And then they’re the ones that often get in trouble when they communicate their dislike of something in the only ways they know how, *after* we didn’t pay attention to early signs within their body language in which they said “no thanks”.

And as professional pet sitters and animal caregivers, our team understands these things! We often tell new clients that when we enter into their home for our meet and greet, we actually *aren’t* going to go straight for the dog and cat with a big greeting, stick our hands in their faces to sniff, or immediately try to pet them. We let your pets get adapted to our presence first and then we wait for clear behavioral indicators that they want to be interacted with. And we continue to do that with each and every visit.

Los Sueños Community Giving is doing some seriously cool stuff! It’s so great to read about the specific activities they’re engaging in. What an impact for our city, and a much needed contribution to collective initiatives to improve animal welfare in our community.

Mumbles is just the sweetest, happiest girl, despite all she has been through, including the loss of her right front leg and orthopedic issues in her remaining front leg. I love being able to take her to her rehab appointments and help with her overall home recovery and care. Her case is very complex, and her momma who loves Mumbles so much has needed a great deal of support. Mumbles has a long way to go, but her veterinary team has been hopeful!

Happy Independence Day! Let’s celebrate …. responsibly!

Did you know that more pets are lost on July 4th than any other day of the year? Including for well-intentioned pet parents who never thought it could happen to their pet.

The number one priority is to prevent escape by getting the whole family and all visitors on board with actively doing so. When the sky starts exploding, even pets who never have tried to escape all year long may try to do so in their panic. Teach your kids the habit of being attentive when opening doors and fences during your indoor/outdoor parties. Walk your kids through checking for secured fencing and gates (a terrified dog can often escape a yard that normally confines them). Consider using a baby gate to prevent a dog’s access to the entry/exit areas of the home.

If there are any concerns about the ability to prevent escape, and/or if your pet becomes anxious with fireworks and festivities, the best thing to do is to create a safe space for your pet to remain inside your home. This could be a comfy covered crate or a familiar room with the curtains closed. Turn on a noise machine, music, or the TV on nice and loud to drown out the noise. And consider giving them a safe, long-lasting chew or frozen stuffed Kong.

Lastly, check that your pets have their collars on with up-to-date ID tags, and that your pet’s microchip number is actually registered to you!

The shelters are already full, let’s not burden them further by making them provide space for more lost pets that could have been kept safe.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the pet Basic Life Support class put on by the Animal Emergency Medical Training veterinary team, and obtain my Recover BLS certification!

AEMT is the gold standard for where to turn for up-to-date, veterinary-grade animal emergency response training. AEMT provides training for different contexts in which an animal may experience a cardiac and respiratory emergency (including the pet-owner/pet-professional class I attended earlier this year). And while the Basic Life Support course is more relevant to the veterinary hospital setting (two-person rescuer situations), the information and hands-on training remain highly applicable to emergencies that occur outside of the hospital. This is mostly due to the fact that the most important part of CPR is the ability to administer high-quality chest compressions. So being able to continue practicing that essential aspect of the training in a hands-on setting is so valuable. Plus, with the future expansion of our pet care services, the ability to incorporate manual breathing support with a breathing mask and an Ambu bag can further aid us in our attempts at successful resuscitation (excluding intubation in single-rescuer settings, as seen in the photo).

I'm so grateful to AEMT in bringing their Recover BLS certification course to Albuquerque this year! See you next time.
