of 1976, by a small group of animal lovers who wanted to make a difference in the abandoned and unwanted pets of Freeborn County. We did not have a formal meeting place or a place to shelter the animals that were taken in. We did, however have a shelter fund, which was building up slowly but surely. We met several different places and kept the animals we took in foster homes, which were difficult

to find. We had several foster home events trying to get people to foster, but that is hard to do when you take in an animal to foster as you get attached to them and do not want to give them up. We bounced around for many years and to many places. We were given up on a couple of times and asked the public for help in keeping the humane society going. Finally we got together a great group of people who were truly dedicated to helping the Freeborn County pets. We still struggled with fostering and meeting places but finally got a small office space where we could hold meetings and maybe once in a while, sneak in a cat or two to foster at the office. In 2006 the city hired an animal control officer who was really pushing for the city and the humane society to work together for the animals. Our director got together with the animal control officer and started brainstorming on the city shelter. They worked it out to where the city and the county would take in animals and when the city animal's time was up, the humane society would take them over and try and get them adopted out. When we got them, they were checked over by the vet and given their shots and spayed or neutered. We applied for spay/neuter grants to help with these surgeries. The animal control officer left to take another job and that left our director at the shelter. She talked to the city officials and started working on a plan to where the shelter would be run by the humane society but still be the property of the city as a no-kill shelter. It was a long process but was finally put into effect. The city and the humane society were awarded an award for this joint union in 2009. Amazon Wishlist Link:

Felix is still waiting.... 🖤

Felix and his siblings came to us after being found as strays when they were around two months old. We believe Felix was born in August of 2021, and would do well with older children and other animals with proper introduction. Felix is one of 6 in his litter and he is the shy guy of the group. He is very quiet and a bit reserved, but does like to be petted once he knows you. He also enjoys cuddling with his kitty friends and would prefer to have a feline friend in his new home! Meet new foster pup on the block - Henry! 👋🏼💕🐶

Henry is a black lab pup born at the end of January 2025. He was found as a stray and the owner never came for him. Henry has lived in foster care since he was brought in. His foster mom says he's the best pup ever. He gets along with her dogs and cats and kids very well, although, recently he has started to show a bit too much interest in playing with the chickens. Henry needs to move on to his permanent home and we are currently taking applications to see who that lucky family will be. Adopt Henry for $200 with approved application. 🐾

Happy Saturday friends! - Sarah 🥰🐶

Sarah is a Treeing Walker Coonhound mix born in September 2017. She came in as a stray and was never claimed. Sarah's photos don't do her beauty justice - she is a lovely sweet energetic girl. She came to us extremely skinny and will probably remain so as long as she is in the shelter. The environment here doesn't seem to allow her the chance to calm down so she isn't hanging on to any of her calories. She needs to go home. She keeps a clean kennel and is everything anyone could want in a companion! Adopt Sarah for $125 with approved application. 🐾

Cass is a sweet loving girl who came in with her 3 kittens and is ready for life with a loving family. Cass was born in October of 2023 and loves to have pets and tail bone scratches. She would love a quiet home with a lot of windows to watch birds from. She doesn't seem to mind other cats, but would also be ok with just people in her new home. Breeze and her 8 siblings were born mid-September 2024. All 9 siblings are orange tabbies with various amounts of white or none at all. All of the siblings are beautiful and would prefer to go home with a sibling or at least to a home with another feline friend. Happy Monday friends! - Jet ✈️ 🐶

Jet is a Jack Russell Terrier that was found as a stray and never claimed. We think she was born in the summer of 2024. She is classic JRT - she needs to get to know you to trust you - then she is all yours, but it might take a bit of time! She doesn't seem to like the other dogs here at the shelter, so she might be best as an only dog. She runs like crazy and has energy to burn. She can jump quite high in spite of having fairly short legs. She is absolutely adorable and a favorite here at the shelter. She has personality in spades. Prior experience with JRTs is preferred. She also will probably not care very much for strangers visiting ;) Adopt Jet for $125 with approved application. 🐾
