The idea that dogs deserve "love" regardless of their behavior or what they are contributing to a household is the #1 cause of behavioral problems.
I know that's a tough pill to swallow - we love our dogs and want them to feel loved.
But it is important to keep in mind that dogs do for themselves and cooperate as needed for acquisition of resources and survival.
β Dogs are conditional creatures. β
What that means for our day to day life is this:
- If your dog learns that jumping on you gets them affection, that's what they'll do.
- If your dog learns that begging for food or counter surfing gets them snacks, that's what they'll do.
- If your dog learns that bad behavior like barking or growling will get others to back off - that is exactly what they will do.
They need boundaries imposed on them either from the environment or from a relevant social source (that's you!).
They are unable to have those boundaries and you are not a relevant social source if you "love your dog no matter what they do."
Boundaries and discipline are as important for dogs as they are for humans. So while you will always love your dog - your dog will appreciate you more if you give them the structure that they really need to thrive πͺ
