🚨 URGENT RESCUE OF A DONKEY & MARE IN PORTIMÃO 🚨
We were contacted by members of the public who were desperately reaching out for help for a donkey and horses situated in Portimão.
The original message we received described the situation as follows: the animals were located directly at the entrance to a hotel, appearing emaciated, tethered and shackled, and without access to hay and water while standing in the sun. The property was surrounded by fencing, making access difficult. We were also told that SEPNA and the local authorities had been informed, but that no action had been taken at that point.
Tourists staying at the hotel next door had also seen the animals and were sufficiently concerned about their welfare to raise their concerns with the hotel management.
It was clear from the information being received that these animals were in desperate need of help and needed to be rescued as soon as possible.
Getting them to safety has only been possible because of the tremendous support, time, energy and coordination of everyone involved. From the initial reports and rescue visits, to the assessments, negotiations and arrangements for their transport, so many people worked together to make this rescue happen.
🐴 THE DONKEY
The donkey is a stallion and was found tethered by one leg with shackles. He appeared very thin, depressed and withdrawn, showing very little interest in anything around him.
We were particularly concerned about the condition of his hooves. The front right hoof appeared very abnormal, while the back right also appeared to be in very poor condition.
🐎 THE MARE
The mare was also found tethered and was lame. She, too, was in need of urgent help and appropriate care.
Both animals are now safe. ❤️
The vet has already been informed that the animals have been rescued, and they will receive the medical attention they need.
This is only the beginning of their journey. We need to cover veterinary treatment, transport, food, rehabilitation and ongoing care so that they can recover, heal and, ultimately, be rehomed into safe and loving homes.
❤️ WE NEED YOUR HELP
A huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who has given their time, energy, expertise and support — from those involved: Jane Kemp, Ginger Lloyd, Ines, Juliet Middleton in the initial rescue visits, negotiations and coordination, to the transport team, veterinary care and everyone who will be involved in their rehabilitation and ongoing recovery.
Without this tremendous team effort, these two animals would not be safe today.
Rescuing animals in urgent situations comes with significant costs. We need financial support to help cover their veterinary treatment, transport, rehabilitation, food and ongoing care.
If you are able to donate, please give whatever amount you can. Every donation, no matter how small, will help these two animals on their road to recovery.
If you are able to make a regular monthly donation, even a small amount, this would be incredibly valuable to us. Regular donations allow us to keep funds available so that when we receive another urgent call about an animal in desperate need, we can act immediately rather than having to wait until funds can be raised.
Please help us give them the second chance they deserve. ❤️🐴
