𝑨 𝑪𝑨𝑺𝑬 𝑶𝑭 𝑷𝑹𝑬𝑴𝑨𝑻𝑼𝑹𝑬 𝑳𝑨𝑩𝑶𝑹 𝑨𝑵𝑫 𝑫𝒀𝑺𝑻𝑶𝑪𝑰𝑨 𝑨𝑺𝑺𝑶𝑪𝑰𝑨𝑻𝑬𝑫 𝑾𝑰𝑻𝑯 𝑻𝑰𝑪𝑲-𝑩𝑶𝑹𝑵𝑬 𝑩𝑳𝑶𝑶𝑫 𝑷𝑨𝑹𝑨𝑺𝑰𝑻𝑰𝑺𝑴

𝑪𝒉𝒂-𝒄𝒉𝒂, a 5-year-old Shih Tzu, was presented to our clinic due to 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖 (difficult delivery). Three puppies had already been delivered at home but were unfortunately deceased upon presentation.

Diagnostic testing revealed that Cha-Cha was 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙀𝙝𝙧𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙖, 𝘼𝙣𝙖𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙢𝙖, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙖𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙖, tick-borne blood parasites that can 𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. Her CBC also showed moderate anemia, which likely contributed to weak uterine contractions and failure of normal labor progression despite oxytocin administration.

On ultrasound examination, the remaining puppies were found to have no detectable heartbeats, indicating fetal death. 𝘼𝙣 𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧. Three additional puppies were delivered, but unfortunately all were already deceased.

Despite the loss of the litter, 𝘾𝙝𝙖-𝘾𝙝𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮.

This case highlights the importance of prenatal veterinary care. 𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙩, 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙡𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠𝙪𝙥𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙫𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣. Early detection and treatment can make a life-saving difference for both mother and puppies.

These 𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝘽𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙥𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙨 visited CLVC for their 5-in-1 vaccination. 𝙑𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 is one of the most important steps in responsible pet ownership, helping protect puppies against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases such as 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙫𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙪𝙨, 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙧, 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙃𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙨, 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙡𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙯𝙖, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙨.

𝐄𝐘𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐘 👁️

This brave little one, 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒐, came to us with a severely damaged and painful right eye that could no longer be saved. To relieve the pain and improve his quality of life, an 𝙚𝙮𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙪𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 (surgical removal of the affected eye) was performed.

𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙣𝙚𝙬𝙨! Gramo was eating well after surgery and was discharged home with medications for continued recovery and care.

While losing an eye may seem alarming, most dogs adapt remarkably well and quickly return to living happy, normal lives.

𝙀𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙫𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 whenever you notice eye redness, swelling, discharge, cloudiness, injury, or changes in vision. Prompt treatment can often save the eye and prevent unnecessary pain.
