Play is one of the most underrated rewards in dog training.
Too often, we rely heavily on food to motivate our dogs, overlooking the value of something just as powerful, PLAY.
When used correctly, play is more than just a reward. It builds engagement, develops drive, strengthens the relationship between the dog and handler, and teaches the dog that working with you is something worth getting excited about.
A dog that learns to work for the opportunity to play isn’t simply performing for a treat. He’s developing a genuine desire to engage, participate, and earn that interaction with his handler.
It also gives us an opportunity to develop important skills such as impulse control, engagement, intensity, and the ability to switch between excitement and obedience.
But here’s the important part, play should be something you build together, not something you simply hand over.
Learn what motivates your dog. Become a better play partner. Make yourself relevant and valuable in your dog’s world.
Because at the end of the day, we don’t just want a dog that obeys when food is present. We want a dog that is motivated to work, eager to engage, and genuinely enjoys working with us.
Don’t underestimate the power of play. Sometimes, the best reward isn’t something you give your dog. It’s something you do together.
