🐶 Eye Proptosis in Dogs 🐶

Shiro was brought to PetFirst Animal Clinic with an eye proptosis, a serious emergency where the eyeball is displaced from its socket due to trauma. Prompt treatment is critical to give the eye the best chance of being saved.

After a thorough examination, we determined that Shiro's eye was still viable. The globe and cornea was intact, the extraocular muscles were sufficiently preserved to allow globe replacement, and there were no findings that required immediate enucleation (eye removal). Because these criteria indicated that the eye still had the potential for recovery, temporary tarsorrhaphy was the treatment of choice.

A temporary tarsorrhaphy involves partially closing the eyelids with sutures for approximately 14 days.
This procedure helps:
👁️ Protect the eye from further injury and drying.
💧 Maintain moisture while the tissues heal.
🩹 Reduce swelling and support proper healing.
❤️ Increase the chances of preserving the eye and, when possible, vision.

⚠️ Eye proptosis is a veterinary emergency. If your pet's eye suddenly protrudes following trauma, seek immediate veterinary care. Early intervention greatly improves the chances of saving the eye.
