Big news for St George’s School, Whanganui 🏫

After years of uncertainty, the historic site has been given a new lease on life — literally.

The Department of Corrections has reportedly locked in a 200-year lease to establish the new Whanganui Central Prison, perfectly positioned to complement and service the brand-new Courthouse and Police Station currently under construction.

Education, justice, rehabilitation — all under one very efficient umbrella.

Whanganui really is planning for the future. 🔒⚖️

Four locks have appeared on the Upokongaro Bridge, and it will be interesting to see if they proliferate or disappear.

Response from WDC Chief Infrastructure Officer, Lance Kennedy:

“We are concerned with the love locks on the Upokongaro Bridge. They need to be removed to allow for maintenance work, this would be done as part of that”.

🚨 ROUND 3 – TURAKINA – POSTPONED 🚨

Bad news crew… the Whanganui 4x4 Wheel Drive Club’s Round 3 this Sunday (1 Feb 2026) at Turakina has officially been postponed.

Reason? We’ve got a new course inspector who’s taken his job VERY seriously… a particularly territorial and extremely angry billy goat has claimed the entire site as his kingdom and is not accepting any 4x4 trespassers today 😤🐐

He’s already charged a few marker poles, stared down a LandCruiser, and let’s just say the “who’s the boss” conversation didn’t go well for us.

New date TBC – we’ll keep you posted once the goat negotiations are complete (or we find a bigger goat whisperer).

Stay safe, keep the rigs ready, and maybe send some calming vibes to Turakina… this goat means business! 😂

The Durie Hill Tower in Whanganui, a historic WWI war memorial built to honor local fallen soldiers, is now being used for the Muslim call to prayer (Adhan) blasting across the city.

It’s reportedly off-limits to anyone else—no more public access to climb the tower or enjoy the views for non-Muslims. This is expected to be enforced by security and police in mid-Feb 2026.

We welcome immigrants of all faiths to New Zealand with open arms, but we need special grants, benefits, and privileges reserved especially for those from Muslim-majority countries. Fairness and equality for everyone; but these guys really deserve our help.

The Gypsy Fair in Whanganui (this weekend at Kowhai Park, Jan 31-Feb 1) has been CANCELLED! 😔

A new council bylaw cracking down on vagrant crooks and swindlers has forced the plug to be pulled on this much-loved travelling event.

No funky stalls, live music, or family vibes this time around. Gutted for everyone who was looking forward to it—hope they sort something out soon.

What a legendary way to wrap up Whanganui Vintage Weekend!

Thousands turned out in force to take down the local pest that’s infamous nationwide — the cheeky kererū! (You know, our plump, fruit-munching native pigeon that’s equal parts beloved and blamed for smashing into windows and devouring entire gardens.)

The highlight? One lucky legend was handed his pick of fine English willow and given 25 minutes to “hit a bitch for 6” in the ultimate pest-control showdown. The crowd went wild!

Thousands of dollars were raised for the Cancer Society, and the real winners? The happy kids diving into the epic kererū lolly/beak scramble — pure chaos and sugar-fueled joy!

What an absolute cracker of an event. Vintage vibes, community spirit, and a bit of good-natured pest-bashing — only in Whanganui! 🏏🍬🐦
