๐ŸŒŸHunter Highlights โ€“ July 2025๐ŸŒŸ
Itโ€™s never too early to start thinking of the Show Hunter season ahead โ€“ so here are some items of interest:

๐ŸดShow Hunter Rule Changes from Conference๐Ÿด
6 days of National Series:
Areas are now allowed 6 National Series days (was 4)
Keep an eye out in your area โ€“ there could be additional Series shows popping up. Quite a number of areas have applied for additional days.

Horse Equitation
There is now only one Equitation National Series class for Hacks. Therefore there will no longer be Junior and Adult Equitation โ€“ only an Open Equitation class at National Series shows.

Jumping Rule Changes that affect Show Hunter
As you know, if there is no specific rule for Show Hunter on any given matter, we defer to the jumping rule.
There are two jumping rule amendments that you should be aware of โ€“ we have not printed the rule in its entirety here โ€“ please read it for yourself in the jumping rule book if in doubt.

Abuse of Horse Abuse of horse โ€“ refer Art. 243 - Abuse of Horses
The rule stating that you could use your whip three times for each perceived misdemeanour has been amended to state that you may only use your whip a TOTAL of three times โ€“ either in the competition arena or in the practice arena

Noseband Tightness
Noseband tightness โ€“ refer Art. 257 โ€“ Saddlery โ€“ 1.3 addition to noseband tightness
Nosebands may be checked for over-tightness and elimination could occur should the noseband be deemed to be too tight โ€“ there is a measuring device that may be used to check this by the steward(s).

๐ŸดShow Hunter Tips & Information๐Ÿด
Course Changes
It is great that some parents and riders leap into the ring to assist in course changes โ€“ and we appreciate the help. However, please follow the instructions of the Course Designer and do not alter heights of jumps without their instruction or permission.
It has come to our attention that heights of fences are being lowered without permission and this is quite disconcerting โ€“ particularly for our younger or less-experienced course designers who may not feel confident to challenge you.
Course designing is a big job โ€“ so please respect the instructions given.

Cat A Ponies
Ever wondered why a very small Cat A Pony can add strides and still be placed highly in the class?
Occasionally there is a Cat A pony that is simply too small to meet the required number of strides without looking like it is going too fast. If a very small Cat A pony adds a stride in EVERY line, and has a great jump and way of going, the judge will reward it accordingly.

12 and Under Equitation
Another reminder to 12 and under equitation riders.
You must still be 12 or under at the end of the season (July 31) to be able to compete in this competition. If you turn 13 during the season (1 Aug 2025 to 31 July 2026) you are NOT eligible to compete in this series.

National Series
In the past you may have seen our National Series referred to as High Points. This is an historical term that has now been retired and from now on, all of these classes should be referred to as National Series.

The Show Hunter Executive, Delegates and others are frequently asked โ€œHow do I change that rule?โ€ or โ€œWhy is that a rule?โ€
In the first instance, ask your Area Delegate โ€“ they will discuss and try to find the history behind the rule and/or provide reasoning for the rule.
If you want to seek a rule amendment/change or maybe suggest a new rule you can do this by following these steps.
Here's how you can submit a remit or add a new rule.
1. First, identify the rule in the rule book. - SH Rules 2018 V11.1.doc
Then, quote the specific section and rule number you want to change.
2. Propose the new wording for the rule - keep language simple and easy to understand.
Provide justification or reasoning for the proposed change. This is important , find some evidence that backs what you are trying to achieve with your rule/remit change. Write it up clearly.
3. Attend your local Area committee meeting, present and speak to your remit- this helps the committee understand and support you and your remit/rule. The committee will discuss it and if necessary they will vote on whether to put it forward. Or they may decide to submit it straight away.
4. Your remit then gets submitted by your area and it will need to be seconded by another area to move forward to the next step. The other area also has to take your remit to their own committee meeting to ensure they agree with it being seconded
5.Remits are sent to areas and publicly notified 21 days prior to the AGM.
This gives time for area committees to meet and discuss how they want their delegates to vote.

As a member of ESNZ you are able to attend your local area meeting and be part of these discussions.
Once again it is really important to do this.

The remit will appear in in the AGM papers for discussion around all the areas in NZ. The remit then gets discussed at conference amongst the delegates . They then vote as to whether the remit moves forward to the AGM . If it doesnโ€™t move forward to the AGM it is considered โ€˜lostโ€™ and goes no further.
If it proceeds the voting delegates will again vote at the AGM. If accepted the remit will be included in the next edition of the rules .

โบ๏ธ ALL rule changes and new rules are made through this process. We are always keen to hear new ideas that can help our sport grow in a positive way so please donโ€™t hesitate to contact your local delegate if you have
something in mind.
The Conference /AGM happens on a yearly basis and this year is in Wellington on the 28-29 June
