Abbey's Rider Story

For more than five years, Tauranga RDA has been one of Abbey’s favourite places in the world — a place where she feels safe, supported, and completely herself.

At the heart of Abbey’s journey is Bear, her favourite horse. “Bear is my favourite because he is handsome with two colours in his coat,” she says. “He also likes to go fast, and so do I.” Riding Bear brings Abbey joy, freedom, and confidence, helping her feel brave every time she climbs into the saddle.

The people at RDA have also played a huge role in Abbey’s growth. Her current volunteer, Marta, brings fun and encouragement to every session. Abbey also holds a special place in her heart for Cathy, the first volunteer who made her feel brave enough to truly use her voice. “Cathy is kind, calm, encouraging, gentle and makes me feel safe,” Abbey says.

For Abbey, RDA is far more than riding lessons. It is a place where she feels she belongs. “I love everything about the RDA. It’s my favourite place to be,” she shares. “When I am on a horse, I feel like I am home.”

Through riding, Abbey has experienced remarkable personal growth. RDA has helped her build confidence, improve balance and coordination, strengthen concentration, and develop greater awareness of her body. Most importantly, it has given her the confidence to speak up, make friends, and feel accepted by people outside of her family.

Riding independently “off the rein” has become a particularly proud achievement for Abbey, giving her a powerful sense of independence and accomplishment. Time with the horses also helps her regulate emotions, feel calm, and build trust — both in herself and in the horses she rides.

“RDA is my happy place,” Abbey says.

Abbey loves telling others about her experience and wants everyone to know that RDA is a welcoming place where people are encouraged to be themselves. “It is the best place and everyone is welcome. You should all come along!”

Abbey and her family are deeply grateful to the volunteers, coaches, supporters, and horses who make RDA possible. “Thank you RDA for all you have given me and other children,” she says. “Thank you to all the volunteers and coaches who give up their time to support me. Thank you to all the horses who have let me ride them and trusted me.”

From the newsletter……
The Leading Stallion of the Tour Award recognises the stallion within the New Zealand Warmblood Stud Book system whose three highest placed progeny across the entire tour achieve the greatest combined score.
This award celebrates consistency, influence, and the ability of a sire to repeatedly produce quality young stock.
For 2026, the competition was exceptionally close.
🏆 Leading Stallion of the Tour - Deveron Numbers Game (FS Numero Uno / Golden Rock / Dornik 😎
Breeder: N & P Hoffmann-Madsen Pony Stallion – NZWB Stud Book
Total of Top Three Progeny: 244.75

His highest scoring progeny were:
• Waimakariri Perfect Timing – 82.5
• LB Dunkirk’s Game Player – 81.25

The Overflow Farm - Genetic Testing Policy

Genetic testing is not about eliminating every carrier, as this would significantly reduce the gene pool. For most of these genes, carriers are completely unaffected. The aim is simply to support transparency and insure informed breeding decisions.

We are happy to contribute 50% towards testing costs for any of the conditions below. This is available to all potential buyers, even before any deposit is placed. We are happy to organise and send samples to the laboratory on your behalf.
Testing for additional genes that are not listed below can also be arranged upon request and further discussion.

Some of these foals’ sires and dams are already genetically tested, and we will advise on the most appropriate tests for each foal on an individual basis.

Most of the conditions listed below are autosomal recessive. This means ponies with one copy of the gene will be completely unaffected. It only needs to be taken into consideration when planning to breed from a carrier. Two carriers should not be bred together, as there is a 25% chance of producing an affected foal.

Recommended for all ponies:
Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM1) – £48.00. Autosomal dominant. A muscle condition affecting energy storage, which may impact performance and cause stiffness or tying-up episodes. Ponies with one copy may be affected.
SynchroGait (DMRT3) – £72.00. Not a genetic disease. This gene influences movement and may result in the pony pacing or tölting. It does not cause illness; however it is considered undesirable, especially for dressage.

Recommended for Connemara bloodlines:
Hoof Wall Separation Disease (HWSD) – £48.00. Autosomal recessive. Causes weakness and separation of the hoof wall. Carriers are not affected.

Recommended for New Forest bloodlines:
Hereditary Myotonia – £48.00. Autosomal recessive. Causes muscle stiffness and delayed relaxation after movement. Carriers are not affected.

Recommended for Warmblood and Thoroughbred bloodlines:
Fragile Foal Syndrome (WFFS / FFS) – £48.00. Autosomal recessive. A severe condition where affected foals are born with extremely fragile skin. Carriers are not affected.

Recommended for Arabian bloodlines:
Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) – £48.00. Autosomal recessive. A neurological condition affecting balance and coordination. Carriers are not affected.
Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) – £48.00. Autosomal recessive. Foals are born without a functioning immune system. Carriers are not affected.
Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS) – £48.00. Autosomal recessive. A fatal neurological condition associated with a diluted coat colour. Carriers are not affected.
Occipitoatlantoaxial Malformation (OAAM) – £78.00. Autosomal recessive. A developmental abnormality of the neck and skull. Carriers are not affected.

In total, testing for all of the above conditions would cost approximately £458. Therefore, we do not typically advise testing every pony for every condition. Instead, we advise testing only the relevant genes on a case-by-case basis, depending on breed composition and the parental test results of the foal.

All genetic testing is to be conducted through Laboklin UK, and their prices include VAT.

Please note that while I have studied Animal Genetics to Master’s degree level, I do not claim to be an expert on all of these genes. If any of the information provided is incorrect, please let me know.
