Katie Laurie may have just claimed another slice of New Zealand history this morning, winning the CSI5* 1.60m Rolex Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows – Continental – in Calgary, Canada.

The 30-strong start card was whittled to just two combinations – Katie with Django II and Sameh El Dahan (EGY) aboard WKD Balou Breeze. The Kiwis won with a double clear in 46.28 seconds.

“I got a bit teary after going in clear in the first round,” said a very emotional Katie. “It feels so good.” She opted to give Django the winter off to work on his fitness and didn’t rush him back early in the season. “I have always had so much faith in him,” she said.

In the jump-off this morning, Katie said they had jumped fences one and two in a nice pace but felt they were a little slow to three and four. “I thought we’d just go for the clear, so we jumped conservatively and clean. He was just so good. He is an awesome horse.”
Katie says Django’s style may not be the most perfect way of jumping, but his goal is simple – don’t touch the poles.

“I never thought it would ever happen,” said Katie of the 5* win. “It is amazing.”
The combination have another 5* at Spruce Meadows next weekend. “He is fit and feeling great. We are ready for a big summer ahead.”

Earlier in the show Katie and ZF Chacco Rio placed seventh in the CSI5* 1.50m class. They were one of seven combinations who came through to the jump-off, which was won by Mark Bluman (COL) aboard S&L Haquinsa, ahead of Conor Swail (IRL) aboard Theo 160.

We have some exciting results from our embryo research collaboration with the University of Auckland's Dr Lynsey Cree's team. We have an abstract accepted to present this work in Kentucky at the ISEET - International Symposium on Equine Embryo Transfer and Technologies conference later in the year!

Thank you to the New Zealand Equine Research Foundation for funding research that keeps the NZ equine industry at the cutting edge!

Our Dr Lee Morris has just returned from a fabulous trip to Brazil, where she presented papers at the ENBREQUI 14th Brazilian Equine Reproduction Meeting on May 14th and 15th, 2026, at Haras Raphaela. A total of 700 equine vets and 40 sponsors attended the event - in true Brazilian style with great hospitality and music from Luiz Henrique e Léo

Lee also spent a day with Dr Tuco Degiuli from the famous breeding farm Ranchos das Americas - standing 38 QH and Arabian stallions!

Whilst in Brazil Lee visited Botupharma and met the team with whom we work closely to supply our favourite semen extenders (Botusemen Gold & Botucrio) and breeding supplies in NZ. She was also able to bring back a new treatment to trial in NZ - "Botukiller," for an endometritis research project.

Dr Morris looks forward to sharing the science, enthusiasm and inspiration of Brazil with our kiwi breeders and vets!
