We headed to Pukekohe today with three horses for the trials.

Heat 17 – Letswishuponastar 🥇 (George Rooke)
A lovely mare who has really strengthened up this preparation. She’s come back happier, more settled, and it feels like the penny has finally dropped with her.

Heat 18 – Mighty Macca – 5th (Matt Cameron)
We were very pleased with his effort today. He settled back, relaxed into his work, and travelled to the line under his own steam without being asked for much. He’s still green and learning the ropes, but he’s a genuine staying type in the making and we’re excited about what’s ahead for him.

Heat 19 – Reserved – 5th (Sam Collett)
Another who trialled nicely. He settled back and worked home well without being pressured. He’ll appreciate the change in direction next time, but overall we’re happy with how he finished off.

Capping off a fantastic week for the team with another win on our home track at Te Aroha on Sunday.

Shez Shamus dug deep for a narrow victory in the Rating 60 1400 with Masa Hashizume on board. She’s a mare we’ve always held in high regard, and while a few niggles throughout her career have held her back from reaching those early expectations, she’s consistently honest and always gives her best. She’s been a really fun horse for her big ownership group, who have shown incredible patience with her.

I’m very grateful to her owners for allowing me the time to manage her properly. If we’d pushed on earlier in her career, she may not still be racing now, so full credit to them for trusting the process.

She thrives on variety — schooling at EventStars Ltd, regular track work, and plenty of time on the treadmill. Keeping older mares mentally fresh can be a challenge, but she’s happiest when her routine is mixed up, and that showed today. She’s never been entirely comfortable going right-handed, but the race fitted the schedule perfectly and was just a short trip next door. The way she fought back made the win even more rewarding.

She’ll now enjoy a week in the paddock and a week on the water walker. The track was very firm on Sunday, so we’ll take the time to let her recover properly — always doing what’s best for the horse.

It’s great to see her get the monkey off her back after 20 starts since clearing her maiden at her second start. With four seconds to her name, she was well overdue, and this win will do her confidence the world of good.

Earlier in the day, Reliable Squeeze was a tough watch. She was held up at vital moments, lost momentum, and still rallied strongly to finish third. She’s much better than a maiden and hasn’t had much luck so far, but her win isn’t far away — and once she breaks through, she’ll progress through the grades nicely.

Finally, a massive thank you to my team at home. These results are a true reflection of your hard work, care, and dedication to our horses. Couldn’t do it without you.

🏇 Te Aroha Race Results – Sunday 7th December 2025

Race 2 – Reliable Squeeze 🥉 (George Rooke)
A tough watch with very little luck in running. She was shut out of gaps when she was trying to build momentum, but to her credit she rallied strongly to finish 3rd. We’ll drop her back to 2000m next start, and she’s knocking on the door for that maiden win — it won’t be far away. She’s a lovely mare who truly deserves her turn.

Race 8 – Shez Shamus 🥇 (Masa Hashizume)
What a gritty, determined effort. She looked beaten, but dug deep and fought back to score her second career win. It wasn’t by much, but the determination she showed is exactly what we’ve always known she has. Masa gave her an absolute peach of a ride. She’s not the happiest going this way around, which makes the win even more encouraging.

A huge congratulations to her wonderful ownership group — your patience and belief in this mare is really starting to shine through.

Massive credit to our team at home for the work behind the scenes. You all do an incredible job. Let’s hope the good roll continues! 🙌🏼

At Lock Racing, it’s the little things that matter — right down to a coloured ribbon attached to the mane and our owners personalised browbands on raceday to match our owners’ colours. It’s a small gesture, but one that reflects the pride we take in presentation, detail, and caring for every horse that walks out of our barn.

We are incredibly grateful for the loyal owners who have stood by us over the years. Your trust means everything. We may not be the biggest operation, but we pour our heart and soul into every horse — from the naturally gifted athletes to the ones others have given up on. Time and time again, we’ve been able to turn their form around, and nothing is more rewarding than seeing them look good, feel good, and run to their full potential.

Most of the little extras come straight out of our own pocket, and that’s perfectly fine with us — because we genuinely love what we do. Not every day goes to plan, but those who know us understand that no stone is ever left unturned at Lock Racing.

Thank you to our owners and supporters who continue to support us, the amazing amount of messages and phone calls yesterday was incredible and it’s not gone unnoticed. Your belief drives us forward, and we’re proud to represent your colours, your horses, and your dreams every raceday. 🐎✨

Big thanks to Casey Brown for all our personalised browbands.

Three from Three: A Perfect Day at New Plymouth

Thursday at New Plymouth will go down as one of those rare race days where everything just falls into place. With three horses lining up and all three returning to the winner’s circle, it was a clean sweep that highlighted preparation, patience, and a little racing magic.

Right from the first runner, the atmosphere felt spot on. The team arrived confident, but no one could have scripted a full hat trick — the kind of outcome trainers dream of but seldom see.

Each winner delivered in their own memorable way.

See You in Beijing kicked things off with a gritty, determined finish that lifted everyone’s spirits. He’s one tough customer, and after such a stop–start preparation, seeing him get the job done today was incredibly rewarding. Huge shout out to our farrier Beau Telfar who has done a fantastic job with this horse, along with Rowena Smyth who’s managed “Sarge” with his PEMF sessions.

Fabulous Gal kept the momentum rolling with a polished, professional performance, confirming that something special was unfolding. We’ve only had her for nine starts, yet she’s already secured three wins for us. Patience has been key, and it’s great to see her owners now reaping the rewards.

Then came Jungle Love, who sealed the perfect day with a brave, hard-fought win to keep her streak alive, delivering a gutsy effort first up this campaign.

Three starters. Three winners. A flawless scorecard.

Behind the scenes, this success reflects the dedication poured into every horse, every gallop, and every decision. Days like this make the early mornings, long hours, and relentless commitment worthwhile — for the riders, handlers, owners, and everyone who believes in each horse’s potential.

New Plymouth delivered a stunning day of racing, and our team made the absolute most of it. Walking away with a 100% strike rate and also gaining my first treble as a trainer is something I’m immensely proud of, and it’s a moment we’ll be replaying for a long time.

Here’s to a day where everything clicked, three stars shone bright, and the results spoke for themselves —
a truly unforgettable Thursday at New Plymouth.

Race Results New Plymouth Thursday 4th December 2025

Race 2 - See you in Beijing 🥇 (Chris Dell)

Super effort to come back to win after being headed down the straight, he’s not the biggest horse but he’s got a great attitude and fight about him. Excellent ride once again by Chris Dell, so pleased to strike up another win together:

Race 5 - Fabulous Gal 🥇 (Kelly Myers)

This mare is racing so well, she’s a very happy horse and just keeps stepping up and up each start. A great ride from Kelly she had in her in the perfect spot throughout.

Race 6 - Jungle Love 🥇 (Chris Dell)

Another super win by the talented mare, headed turning for home but dug deep and fought back to win, she’s still got no idea what she’s doing which is very exciting going forward.

Both See you in Beijing and Fabulous Gal were strapped by Casey Brown, we are grateful for your help at the races and it’s a pleasure to have to lead our horses in.

A massive shout out first and foremost to my wonderful team at home, all three of my riders are doing an extremely fantastic job with these horses, Lance and Shane on the ground, along with Casey and Jamie providing all the great care for them and we are all so proud of your efforts.

Congratulations to my loyal and patient owners, without the patience these horses wouldn’t be here today, so we are all very thankful for your continued support throughout and I think we will be in for a great Xmas period.

Go well team Lock

Race 3 - I’ll Be Home Soon (Sam Collett)

First start after the one trial this time in, will benefit hugely from today’s outing but a horse we have alot of time for. A really nice stayer in the making.

Best of luck to all connections and followers of the stable today.

25/11/2025

Smart trial by Golden Locks (4YO G Almanzor x Miralago) today at Taupo over the 1300m, ridden by Sam Collett.

He’s shown a lot of ability at home, he trialled super over 1200m at Avondale 2 weeks ago to finish 3rd where he was finding the line from off the pace and today able to sit just behind them and peel out and knuckle down well to the line, he was able to secure those rating points to now be able to head to the races and warrant a start.

He’ll be one to follow as he steps out over ground too.

24/11/2025

See you in Beijing enjoying himself outside in the paddock.

Nothing like a good roll and buck around 🕺

23/11/2025

Lucy ( 3yo F Time Test x Constellation) resumes work after a short freshen up, she had her first trial at Ellerslie just over a month ago where she placed 4th.

She is a pretty exciting filly who we really look forward to seeing back on the track.

Patience prevails

Promising mare Miss Anna Lee delivered on early promise after taking out the Energy Ford MDN 1200 at New Plymouth on Friday by 4.5 lengths in the hands of Sam Collett.

The 5yo Belardo mare is on the come back trail after a year off the scene with a tendon injury. Unfortunately she strained her tendon after a trial and was immediately spelled, she has had over a year in paddock and has had a long slow buildup, she spent 6 weeks at the water walker (Kendayla Park) before coming into our stable so had built up a huge amount of fitness without any pressure on her tendon, she spends all her time on the treadmill and used the track for a couple of jumpouts before heading to the trials for a quiet trial, subsequently she has placed (second) twice leading up to her win on Friday all three races this time being at New Plymouth.

Being only lightly raced (four starts) if we can keep her sound and happy we think she has a pretty bright future, her half brother come 4th in the Melbourne Cup a few weeks ago and has been group and listed placed, so her value is only going up.

At this stage she will head to the paddock while the tracks firm up and come back in for a winter prep as she loves the wet. Her loyal and patient owners have been absolutely fantastic throughout her career to date and are being duely rewarded.

It’s been a tremendous team effort to get this mare back to the races, which we are all very proud of.
Miss Anna Lee was strapped by Ken Hawkins.
