Jungle Love kicks off her new preparation this Saturday at Ōtaki and we couldn’t be happier with how she’s come up this campaign. A winner of 2 from just 3 starts, she’s returned in tremendous order and looks fantastic heading into her resumption.

She’s a beautiful mare with plenty of quality and we feel she will continue to improve as she gets over more ground, but the 1400m looks a lovely starting point following her encouraging trial placing two weeks ago.

We’re excited to have her back at the races and look forward to seeing her return to the track on Saturday 🫶🏼🐎

JoeJoeccini enjoying a change of scenery this morning, popping over a few of the smaller jumps at the track. He absolutely loves his jumping and is looking bright, happy and thriving in himself.

He heads to Ōtaki this Saturday for his first run for the stable. While the 1600m will be well short of his best distance, we’re looking forward to seeing him hit the line strongly as we build toward some bigger goals this preparation. 🙌🏼

Another Step Forward for Lock Racing 🚛🐎

Having our own stable truck is a huge advantage for both our team and our owners.

It allows us to manage every part of our horses’ travel, ensuring they arrive at the races, trials or jumpouts in top condition, relaxed and ready to perform.

Our truck is purpose-built with comfort and safety front of mind, featuring:
• 10-horse capacity
• Side load & rear load options
• Fully air-conditioned throughout
• Internal lighting
• Internal & external cameras for constant monitoring
• Spacious, well-ventilated bays
• Smooth, quiet ride to minimise travel stress

With the rising cost of fuel, we’re doing everything we can to keep transport as cost-effective as possible for our owners, while still delivering a premium level of care.

Having this setup gives us greater flexibility, better planning, and ensures we can put the horse first every step of the way.

Another step forward for the stable — and another way we continue to go the extra mile for our owners and horses 🙌🏼

Worth the Wait: Promising 3YO Steps Up ✨

Connections of Lucy were well rewarded today, taking out the Flax Sports Bar MDN 2/3YO 1400m at Tauherenikau at just her fourth raceday start. After placings at her previous two runs, she put it all together in style—drawing clear by a length.

A lovely ride by Mereana Hudson saw Lucy settle perfectly just in behind the leader throughout. When the pressure went on and the leader shifted off the fence, Lucy was presented with the perfect run through along the inside and she did the rest.

Purchased for just $500 off Gavelhouse as a yearling, Lucy has been given plenty of time to mature and come into herself. I’ve got a lot of time for the Time Test progeny—they’ve all got ability, you just have to be patient with them. I’d happily fill the stable with them.

I’m very lucky to have such a fantastic group of owners who trust the process and allow us to take our time. Lucy is raced by a wonderful syndicate, many of whom have been long-time supporters of the stable, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see that patience paying off.

Lucy will now head out for a well-earned break. She’s been up for a while, travelled away a couple of times, and achieved this in her first preparation. We think a lot of her, and there’s no doubt she’ll come back an even better horse next time in.

Race Results – Tauherenikau | Sunday 3rd April

Race 2
Lucy 🥇 (Mereana Hudson)

A very satisfying win by Lucy today 🙌🏼 She’s a filly we’ve always had a lot of time for, so it was great to see her put it all together and win with real authority.

Another top ride by Mereana, and full credit to Lucy who kept finding strongly to the line 💪🏼

Huge congratulations to her ownership group – we’re very proud to share this moment with you all 🫶🏼

Lucy will now head out for a well-earned spell and come back even better.

Race 3
No More Pennies 4th (Mereana Hudson)

A tough watch… caught three wide the entire trip, then struck serious trouble on the turn when another runner shifted out abruptly, forcing him right back to last and nearly bringing him down.

To his credit, he picked himself up and charged home for 4th – a huge effort considering everything that went against him.

He’s a horse that just hasn’t had much go his way, but when the luck turns, he’ll make up for it in a hurry.

A big thank you to our team at home – the horses are racing in great form and being presented beautifully each time 🙌🏼

Waipā Trials Results – Tuesday 28th April 🐎

A busy and encouraging day at the trials with a number of the team stepping out — plenty to like heading forward 🙌🏼

Heat 1
Shez Shamus 🥈 (Elen Nicolas)
Lovely return from this honest mare, she always gives her all and looks to have come back in great order.

Badgeringdawitness – 6th (Tayla Mitchell)
Good resuming trial from the old boy. Not overly comfortable right-handed, but a nice hit-out over a short trip. He’ll improve stepping up to 1400–1600m.

Heat 2
Debit 🥇 (Masa Hashizume)
Terrific return from Debit. She had a few niggles last prep but has come back a much stronger horse and looks right back to her best.

Heat 3
JoeJoeccini – 5th (Elen Nicolas)
Very pleased with this effort. Settled back and hit the line strongly late. A new addition to the team who has form over ground, so it was great to see him finishing off like that.

Heat 4
Jungle Love 🥈 (Masa Hashizume)
Exciting to have this mare back. She trialled super and looks on track for a strong campaign. Not entirely comfortable right-handed, so plenty of merit in the run.

Heat 6
Pickofthelitter – 6th (Masa Hashizume)
Nice return from this staying mare. The tighter track and shorter trip didn’t suit, but she’ll take good benefit from the run and improve heading to raceday.

Heat 7
See You In Beijing – 6th (Elen Nicolas)
First look in open grade. Got shuffled back and struggled to make ground from there. Still improving and not fully wound up — he’ll bounce back.

All horses looked fantastic on the day and the trials were very encouraging across the board. It’s shaping as an exciting season ahead for the team ✨

Massive thanks to the whole crew for a big, smooth day — everything ran like clockwork. Special mention to Robyn Peters for organising all the horses, gear and yards, making the day stress-free 👏🏼

Lest We Forget 🌺

Today we pause to remember and honour the brave men and women who served and sacrificed for our freedom.

In racing, as in life, we’re reminded of the strength, courage, and resilience that defines our communities — values that echo the spirit of those who came before us.

From everyone at Lock Racing, we take a moment to reflect, give thanks, and remember.

Lest we forget.

Badgeringdawitness 🦡

Badger enjoying a bit of pampering this morning with a PEMF session from Rowena’s Equine Pulse Therapy.

With an older horse, it’s all about staying on top of those little niggles and keeping them feeling fresh and supple.

He heads to the trials on Tuesday, and we’re looking forward to seeing him back out there doing his thing 🙌🏼

20/04/2026

Another new addition to the Lock Racing team is the lovely filly With Honours (3F Written By x Thee Achiever), joining us from Milan Park Stud.

“Samantha,” as she’s known at home, has arrived in fantastic order and settled in beautifully. She’s had three trials to date, including a placing, and we’re looking forward to getting to know her and seeing what she can do in our system. A change of environment can often make all the difference, and we’re hopeful she’ll thrive with us.

As part of our training routine, all of our horses are educated on the treadmill. It’s a huge asset to our program—providing variety, building strength, and allowing us to maintain consistent work, even on those wet Te Aroha mornings.

Excited to have her on board and can’t wait to see her progress 🙌🏼

17/04/2026

Friday afternoons done right 🙌🏼

Set against our peaceful surroundings and those pretty special views, we wrap up another week at the stables. The horses are all tucked in, happy and eating, ready for a well-earned rest ahead of a big morning of gallops tomorrow.

It’s shaping up to be a busy few weeks ahead with jumpouts, two sets of trials, and a couple of race meetings on the calendar — including a trip down to the beautiful Waipukurau.

A great way to head into the weekend with a winner alongside Jo Rathbone doing the training, with Pile Driver saluting at his 17th start in a highweight, expertly ridden by Kayla McNab. Shared with Gee Gee Equine Ltd (Mgr: Gerard Peterson), G Jennings, P Lock, C Talbot, S Harrison & J Rathbone — a fantastic result for all involved, he’s really taken to the jumping, certainly sharpened him up and he looks one to follow over the winter months 👀

Plenty to look forward to — bring it on 💪🏼
