⚠️ Bird Flu (H5N1) has been detected in the Wellington region

Following the recent detection of avian influenza (bird flu) in a wild bird in the Wellington area, we're asking our community to be extra vigilant.

If you see a sick or dead wild bird:
🐦 Please don't touch it or move it.
📞 Report it to the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) on 0800 80 99 66.
🐕 Keep dogs on a lead and away from sick or dead birds.

If your pet has come into contact with a sick or dead bird, please contact your nearest CareVets clinic for advice before bringing them in.

Our Wellington clinics have also introduced additional precautions for birds visiting the clinic. Please phone us before bringing in any bird, so our team can safely assess the situation and provide guidance.

🦆 Bird Flu (HPAI H5N1) Update – Please Read 🦆

With HPAI H5N1 (bird flu) now confirmed in the Wellington region, we'd like to remind everyone of the safest way to help protect our wildlife, our community, your pets, and our team.
If you find a sick wild bird:
• Please don't handle or move it unless absolutely necessary. In many cases, leaving it where it is gives it the best chance of recovery and helps reduce the spread of disease.
• If you need advice, give us a call before transporting the bird.
If a bird does need veterinary attention:
📞 Please call us before you arrive - 042379600.
🚗 When you get here, stay in your vehicle and phone reception. One of our team members will come out to assess the bird and advise on the next steps.
If you do need to transport a bird:
✔️ Wear gloves and a face mask if available.
✔️ Place the bird in a secure, well-ventilated box lined with a towel.
✔️ Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
✔️ Keep children and pets well away from the bird.
If you see three or more sick or dead wild birds together:
❌ Please don't touch or move them.
☎️ Report them immediately to the MPI Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

These recommendations are based on current guidance from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and the New Zealand Veterinary Council.
