Managing an allergic patient requires a multimodal approach. This means we use a combination of things to get the best control of the signs and symptoms.

This can look like a medicated bath once weekly and leave on medicated conditioner a couple of times a week. Introducing a diet high in essential fatty acids and other skin supporting nutrients. Anti-itch medications to control itching and break infection cycles. Immunotherapy to retrain the immune system into being less sensitive, which can be managed by our team or via prescription with your local veterinary team.

What combination works best for your pet?

A RASH roadie to Welcome Bay Vet Clinic in Tauranga, where we had a couple of patients with beautiful positive reactions on intradermal allergy test, followed by Dr Helen presenting a lecture to local veterinarians on immunotherapy.

Then it was over to Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre for an intradermal allergy test on a beautiful horse who has been experiencing equine asthma.

Allergic skin and respiratory disease affects many of the horses in our care which can lead to performance and life-limiting symptoms. This week we welcomed specialist veterinary dermatologist Dr Helen Orbell and her head nurse Danielle McCabe to help one such patient.
The horse received an intradermal skin test for a plethora of allergens which was then evaluated. This resulted in several positive results which enabled some management changes to be prioritised and for Immunotherapy to be tailored and dispensed for the patient. Immunotherapy normalises the immune response to environmental airborne allergens and is the only therapy that has the potential to prevent progression of the disease. With a successful response rate of 70% of horses with atopic dermatitis, immunotherapy helps to manage equine allergies with symptoms of pruritic dermatitis (itchy skin), urticaria (hives) and allergic respiratory disease (equine asthma).
If your horse is experiencing allergy symptoms please reach out and discuss this further with our team of vets.
