Last week was National Volunteer Week! 🐱🐾

We celebrated our volunteers and fosters with a week full of fun sweet treats and a daily scavenger hunt for prizes. ❤

To end the week we held a potluck lunch at our Palmerston North Community Leisure Centre and had an awards ceremony. We wanted to say a massive thank you to our incredible sponsors for making it possible to give out some awesome and well deserved prizes to our fosters and volunteers! 🥰✨

Important message for teachers! 📚️🎓️🍎 Our SPCA Live Education Webinars are returning for Term 3!

Intended for both primary and intermediate students, these free webinars run by our Education team are a fun and engaging way to teach tamariki about animal welfare.

SPCA is all about prevention - it's in our very name. By teaching young learners as much as we can about animal care and welfare, we can inspire a kinder generation and prevent cruelty in the future 🙏 These webinars help to do just that!

Spaces are limited! You can find out more about the webinars, and teachers can learn how to register via our site: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/live-education-webinars-return

Our final category in the 2026 SPCA Purina New Zealand National Volunteer Awards is for the Dedicated Volunteer award. Our winner is Victoria Hall, from our Palmerston North Centre! 🏆️

Victoria has been an essential part of the Palmerston North team for several years, consistently demonstrating dedication, kindness, and reliability.

She volunteers three days each week, transporting animals to Massey Vets for desexing and surgical procedures - a one-hour round trip! This allows our staff to remain on-site, ensuring the animals at the Centre continue to receive the care and attention they need 🩵

Victoria also gives her time to support fundraising efforts, including volunteering at sausage sizzles, and she fully immerses herself in our team culture. She is known for her positivity and encouragement, always offering kind words to staff, especially during challenging times. Her uplifting attitude has a meaningful impact on team morale.

In addition to her on-site support, Victoria generously opens her home and heart as a foster volunteer. Victoria’s compassion and positive spirit make her an invaluable member of our community, and a truly deserving candidate for this award. Thank you, Victoria! 🎉

How is it that Ned is still waiting? 🤎

Sometimes the quietest dogs have the biggest hearts, and that's certainly true of Ned. While other dogs find their families, this gentle boy patiently waits for someone to see beyond his shy nature and discover the sweet, loyal soul underneath. The world can feel a little scary for Ned, but with kindness, patience, and reassurance, he slowly begins to trust—and watching his beautiful personality shine through is something truly special. We can't understand why he's been overlooked for so long; he is the most loving and devoted companion. All he needs is someone willing to give him the chance he deserves.

Could you be the person Ned has been waiting for? Apply to adopt today and give this deserving boy the safe, loving home he's been dreaming of. 🐾🤎

📣 Puppies Before Profit – Bring in Breeder Laws! 📣

Today, we’re launching our Puppies Before Profit campaign, to raise awareness around New Zealand’s lack of dog breeding legislation and to build support for law reforms.

Currently, we’re FAR behind other countries when it comes to dog breeding laws. In New Zealand:

🐾 Anyone can breed and sell puppies
🐾 There are no restrictions on the number of breeding dogs a person can keep
🐾 There are no minimum supervision levels
🐾 There are no minimum or maximum ages for breeding
🐾 There are no maximum number of litters across a dog’s lifetime
🐾 There are no restrictions on close inbreeding.

Despite the current lack of specific rules, our recently commissioned survey found that 96% of New Zealanders think dog breeding should be regulated.

This isn’t a niche animal welfare issue. It’s something that New Zealanders deeply care about. We need clear, enforceable standards that apply to all breeders, and ensure every breeding dog receives appropriate care ❤️
